#LOVE : Moda Blog Tour

Welcome to our stop on the blog tour! We’re super excited to be a part of this!!! (And winning free stuff is always a fun little incentive for keeping up, right!?!?) So, let’s dive into some questions!

When did you start quilting? Tell us about your first quilt.

The year was 1999. My two good friends (Connie and Vicky) and I decided we would each make a quilt before the new millennium arrived.
Connie, being from Iowa, and already knowing how to quilt, became our teacher and mentor. She took this role very seriously! When Vicky and I showed up for our first lesson, Connie presented us with a goody bag stuffed with a quilting frame, thimble, wax, quilt needles, quilting thread, and safety pins. We decided on the Ohio Star design. Every week we had to complete 3 identical Ohio Star blocks made from our own sewing stashes, and then swap out so that we all had the same blocks in all varieties and themes. And since we never do anything in a small way, this first quilt was queen sized.

When we finished all of our blocks, Connie sent me and Vicky to the fabric store for sashing and backing fabric. (She had a conflict, but she said she trusted us.) Vicky and I calculated and crunched numbers for over an hour. We checked and rechecked our work before making the purchase.
At our next lesson we told Connie that her share was $180.00. Her mouth hit the floor!!! Anyway, we did learn how to layer and hand quilt. I have loved and used that quilt for 14 years now. Memories of the laughter we shared in the process is priceless to me!

This quilt became “Rudy’s Window Quilt”… once it was complete, it was never used by anyone but him. Because of it’s size, it folded up nicely into a moldable cushion that I would put on top of our reck-room couch. It was at the perfect vantage point for Rudy to do what he loved most… guarding our house from mailmen, trash collectors, and other potentially dangerous foes. I really really wish I had a picture of Rudy in action… because it was quite a site.

Oh wait wait wait… I found one in a previous blog post! 🙂

On a depressing side note, we lost our best boy this past year. He’s left a really big hole in our lives, that we’re finding difficult to fill. He also made many appearances in our blog over the years, so I’m sure he’ll be missed from here as well.

What is the best part of your design process?

Sketching. I love gridded paper and colored pencils!!! Lauren or Carrie make me a gridded sketch book for each new fabric line that we produce. In it I jot down thoughts, draw fabric ideas, diagram patterns, and write directions. I take it everywhere I go.

A fun side note… these sketch books were so popular among my friends, that we decided to include them in our new book!

Now for the big project!

Here’s another big quilt… this project is featured on all the other blogs, so make sure you check it out. This project really allowed us to get creative! (We missed that “get creative” notation, when the instructions were sent out… and instead, we followed the quilt instructions to a tee.) This project features a layer cake, charm pack or mini charm, but what is your all time favorite moda precut? The directions for this pattern can be found here.

I love jelly roles (2 1/2″ strips from selvage to selvage of each fabric in the line). They can be cut into smaller pieces to become parts of quilt blocks.

But I like to use them in pattern designs where they remain in their long strip state. You may be familiar with Angela Yosten’s Princess And The Pea quilt (found on the moda bake shop site). Each jelly roll strip represents a mattress layer. Soooo cute!!! That inspired me to design our Pencil Box quilt pattern, which is featured on the cover of our new book, Sweet and Simple Sewing with Martingale Publishing.

And then our latest fabric line, Pedal Pushers, features our Wet Paint pattern which also uses the long jelly roll strips.

So for the giveaway…

We’re giving away three prizes! Yay! See below…

Here’s how to enter : Just leave one comment… it can be about whatever you want… 🙂 If you want to tell us about your first quilt, that might be fun!

And then… If you want to get entered a SECOND time, you can do one of the following things :
1. follow us on Twitter. Here’s the link!
2. follow me on Pinterest. Here’s the link!
(And then just leave a second column telling us which extra entry you did. 🙂

We’ll draw the three winners in one week, so be sure to check back!

The giveaway features our newest and most favorite line Pedal Pushers! 🙂 Hope you guys enjoy!

… And because I wasn’t super excited with the coloring in that last photo… here’s a better shot of the colors. They’re super nice! Kind of sherberty!

Make sure to check out everyone else!! Everyone is awesome!

I have always loved quilts and all things PA “Dutchy” since I grew up and live in PA. My first quilt was a doll quilt I made with my daughter on a snow day home from school. Fun memories of that little quilt and where it has led me in my quilting journey!

My first quilt was a table runner I just finished this year. I’m now working on a pinwheel quilt for my granddaughters’ bed. Thanks for the chance!

  • kay :-) says:

LOVE the jelly roll ideas!! My first ‘official’ quilt is a sampler done in a class – machine pieced, hand quilted…. but the first ones I love are the ones I did as a young girl for my dolls…. completely by hand with no knowledge, just intuition. Kind of makes me think of how the early quilters began the whole process 🙂 Thank you for hosting the give=away!

  • Toni Anne says:

So sorry to hear about Rudy. Our sweet collie Sandy is 12 as far as we know she rescued us when she was 5. The last 2 mths have been hard for her at times, we see her slowing down. A few trips to the vet and a couple of RX’s to make her comfortable. I cherish each day with her, she’s the best we’ve ever had, in so many ways. I made her a cat quilt for the winter a few yrs ago, she loves to snuggle under it at night..

  • Susan says:

I LOVE your new fabric line–my favorite so far!!! My first quilt was a sampler baby quilt that I made for my first son, about to turn 25. I used primary colors of gingham with a white background. I continued to make each of my boys a baby quilt, using those same colors but different patterns. Their baby quilts are still very special to them. Thanks for the chance to win some of your yummy fabric!

  • Dorian says:

What fun colors in your Petal Pushers line! Your quilts are fun too. My first quilt was a baby quilt, done in big log cabin blocks, for my oldest son. What a disaster that quilt is! LOL, fun to look back on though. Thanks for a fun blog hop and giveaways!

  • VickiT says:

Great post. So sorry about your dog. That’s so hard to lose a family pet. It’s amazing how empty your house feels afterward. We lost our Ragdoll cat last December and it was extremely hard. It wasn’t until about 4 months later before we decided to get another Ragdoll because it was just too quiet and I missed my buddy because he was with me all day long and followed me everywhere.

My first quilt technically was a table runner made in a class I took locally. I don’t count that one for a number of reasons although it is a beautiful runner but the class was not run very well and didn’t even teach binding which is kind of an integral part of making a quilt. 🙁 Was not too impressed with the training given as it was a beginner quilting class. But, my second was made with an online quilt along and it turned out just awesome. I love it. It was a challenge for me to keep up, but I forced myself and got it done. I sent it out (hubby and I actually drove over 2 hrs to a quilter I’d ‘met’ online) to be quilted and here it sits in my sewing room taunting me. Why? Because that fear of messing it all up by actually doing the binding. THAT was my biggest reason for taking that local beginner quilting class – to learn binding. And then it was never taught at all so I still have the fear of doing that. Stupid, yes I know.

  • wendy says:

My first quilt was only a couple of years ago and it was all made on the machine, other than the binding, no way was I attempting to hand piece one! It wa a simple baby quilt made with a charm pack in a lattice setting

  • wendy says:

    I follow you on Pinterest

  • Verna says:

My first quilt was a small Trip Around the World that I hand quilted. It took me 17 years to finish (mostly because the first of our three boys was born shortly after I started). My work has greatly improved since that first project.

  • Amber says:

    I follow you on Pinterest!

  • Nancy Gilliam says:

This is going to date me, but my first quilt was a baby quilt made with Laura Ashley fabric and tied with pink yarn.

  • Amber says:

My first quilt was the log cabin! I read and read the pattern so many
times trying to get it right! It needs finished, and maybe I’ll return
to it, and quilt it myself;)!

  • Hayley says:

My first quilt was a simple patchwork. Very wonky, but I still love it

  • dee says:

love love love what you did with the jelly roll and the “paint brushes” my fav precut is jelly roll also…I seem to be “collecting” them…..fabric line here is beautiful

  • Kathie L says:

My first quilt was a Log Cabin, which my mum still uses!

  • Margaret says:

The colors in your new fabric line do look like sherbet. What a great idea. It gives me some ideas about designing a quilt. 😉

  • Lisa R says:

My first quilt was a total disaster to say the least. I was 14 or 15 maybe. It was a super large maybe a queen sized whinnie the pooh split rail fence. The book of directions only went to a twin size; I decided I wanted to make it bigger to fit my bed so I doubled it but that made it huge. Everything was fine until I went to flip and tie it. It was all discombobulated and there was all this extra fabric and it was awful. At the time my mom was taking a class to make a Lover’s Knot quilt; in which the traditional one had angled off corners not square. I was like okay I’ll do that so I literally chopped off all the corners as it was all three layers. Then re-sewed the edges and tied it again. It was better but still some extra fabric. But I still have it and have patched it a million times; and I love it.

  • Lisa R says:

And I started following you on Pinterest!

  • Cathy says:

There is a little bit of Lauren and Jessi Jung in every room in my house be it a pillow or quilt. Always the coziest and most cheerful spot in the place!! Your colors and designs are just plain yummy ( yes, like sherbet). Keep brightening our world with your amazing creativity.

  • Kandy says:

Thanks for the giveaway – My first ever quilt was a large (they must have been 5″ +) hexie quilt in chocolate browns and pinks! – My Mum threw it away in one of their house moves, shame as it would have been a laugh to see it again.

  • Sally M says:

Your line of fabric is gorgeous!! My first quilt was a sampler quilt of 6 squares which I hand quilted. Pretty proud of my work.

  • Kandy says:

I am following you on Pintrest – my nemesis as tooo many hours pass by in a single visit!

I love the fabric- both the colors and the designs. I started my first quilt many years ago (in the early 80’s), then got busy and did not finish it. My first completed quilt was wonderful wall hanging made with 1.5 inch squares that was the shape of the great state of Texas. It is made with fabric showing a lot of my favorite Texas things.

I love the name Pedal Pushers. It takes you way back when kids were actually wearing pedal pushers. My first quilt was done in a beginner’s quilting class in the 90’s. I still have the quilt. It’s not the best quilt in the world, but it’s mine and was done with a lot of hard work and love. Thank you for being a part of the Moda Love Blog Hop and giving all of us the chance to become Moda winners.

My first quilt was a baby quilt for my first born 20 years ago. I still remember the headaches it caused me. Stunning new line, it’s on my list of must purchase ASAP!

  • Michele says:

My first quilt still hasn’t been finished… I hand appliqued designs onto blocks (which weren’t evenly cut) and my mother amazingly sewed it into a top. But it turned out queen sized and now I need to get my aunt-in-law to help me quilt it on her long arm. 🙂

  • TS says:

My first quilt is quite hideous, but my mom keeps in tucked away to bring out when we need a good laugh 🙂 I LOVE your new fabric line.

  • Jenny says:

I love this line! I just followed you on Pinterest. My first quilt was completed just this past July and it took me a couple months. I started with a HUGE one too and no pattern (what was I thinking) but it came out just as I imagined as long as you don’t look at my seams. It has a large mosaic type heart that changes from red to a center of bright yellow and then outward turns to purple. Hard to describe but I love it and am proud of it.

  • Carole M. says:

My first quilt was a little sampler wall hanging I made in a learn to quilt class. It is still hanging in our bedroom! The 1st one I made just on my own was a Friendship Star quilt I made for my Mom.

My first quilt isn’t actually quilted yet. I consider it my first, though, because it’s the first top I competed and I worked so hard on it! It’s a sherbet coloured picnic blanket that ended up being stolen by my son for a fort (which is why it never got finished).

My First Quilt – I was in a little shop in Fredericksburg TX back in 2008 (at the time it was named “Eidleweiss”) and they had a little corner full of fabrics, and these little packs of “squares”. Well, I didn’t know what they were at the time, but I had to have them! So I bought 2 packs of them, and later learned they were “charm packs” from Moda. I had been sewing since I was 14, but never made a quilt. I made a small quilt from these “squares” and have been quilting ever since. THANKS MODA! You gave me my start!

The second one I made was for my daughter and she still cherishes it to this day (20 years later).

  • CathyK says:

My first quilt was a rail fence which I made for my yet to be born son. The neighbor across the street worked with me every day because I hadn’t even touched a sewing machine before. She has since passed and I am forever grateful to her for introducing me to this hobby. It has been a Godsend to me.

  • Kiri says:

My first quilting project was a sampler quilt that I made with a quilt class. It’s not quite finished, actually! The class was supposed to make 4 blocks and do a wall hanging, but I got addicted and created 12 blocks. Then I was inspired to add an appliqué border… And shoved the quilt in my closet. I completed three baby quilts and a table runner before finding the courage to bite the bullet and pull my first quilt out again. The appliqué turned out to be easier than I had feared, and now I’m nearly done hand quilting it. I’m really pleased that I decided to add the border; ironically, it’s now my favorite part!

  • Mary Val says:

My first quilt was made 1981-1984 – it was Pam Bono’s Transportation quilt. It was published in a magazine, I wrote away someplace to order the pattern. It took 18 months to collect the fabrics, 18 months to make it. I cut up a bunch of my maternity clothing and used the fabric in the quilt blocks. It was machine pieced and appliqued, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. It was the first quilt I ever entered in a show, it got an “honorable mention” at the State Fair that year. Gave it to my son for his 5th birthday, (he is now 35 years old) he used it for 10 years on his bed. I restored the quilt at my son’s request 5 years ago; it now hangs in the bedroom of his new baby girl. I redid all the embroidery, traced fabric pieces from the blocks to make new patterns, cut and hand appliqued new pieces to replace those that were very worn, or torn, or completely disintegrated. It took 6 weeks of daily of hand sewing to restore it, then laundered carefully while holding my breath; it came out beautifully, I was very pleased.

  • Such great colors in your fabric collection. My first quilt was a Sun bonnet sue variation I made when I was about 14 many (ahem) years ago. I sewed ribbons and lace and buttons all over it. I made it for my new adopted cousin.

  • Joanna says:

  • Linda E says:

My first “attempt” at making a quilt was when I was in 8th grade. In my home-ec sewing class, I collected scraps from the other girls in my class. I had every type of fabric from thick wide-wale corduroy to thin sheer material that was popular to use for sleeves at that time, and all sorts of colors and designs. I didn’t know about cutting the fabric into uniform pieces so they would all go together nicely. I didn’t know about 1/4 inch seams, I knew nothing whatsoever about quilting. I simply started sewing the pieces together. There were curves in some places, bulges in others – It was the ugliest thing imaginable. I took my “treasure” home to show my mom, certain that she would be proud of me and my new love for sewing. She took one look and exclaimed “What have you done?!?!?!” I explained that I was making a quilt. She tried her best to hold back laughter and just shook her head and said incredulously, “That’s NOT the way to make a quilt!” I was hurt and embarrassed and although I did continue sewing, I never gave another thought to making a quilt until my daughter was ready to leave for college. I had been given a box of my mother-in-laws fabric and sewing supplies when she passed away. There were several quilting magazines included, as well as a LOT of pieces that had already been cut. I decided to try again, and although I still didn’t know anything about quilting, I was able to put together the pieces and made a fairly good looking quilt for my daughter to take with her. She loved the colors, she loved the pattern, but most of all she loves it because it was started by her granny and finished by her mom and it was made especially for her.

  • Sandy R. says:

My first quilt was made out of double knit..I used a pair of my slacks, blue and white houndstooth check, (Yikes), solid navy and solid white..it was nine patches with sashing. I made it for my oldest daughters, then boyfriend, now husband…that was about 35 years ago and the quilt is still being used. It looks almost as good as when it was made, you just can’t wear out double knit, can you???

  • Clara Chandler says:

  • Gloria B says:

My first quilt was an Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day Log Cabin that I made in a class in Cyprus in 1990/1. It took a year and I had to use cardboard templates and scissors as the instructor wouldn’t let me use my bought-in-the-US mat and ruler and rotary cutter!
I still have it but the cheap polyester wadding has either compressed or migrated through the surface and it is a little thin.

It is so large that some day I will take it down, cut away the muslin back, and have it quilted up – it was a very intricate pieced pattern and the fabrics I used I still love today. It is fun to be able to see all those hours spent every day.

I had started a few quilts, but never finished them (still have that problem!!)…a new shop opened in a nearby town and had a sample of a log cabin quilt hanging…..decided I could make it and they had used a NEW tool to cut it…a rotary cutter!! I couldn’t afford the rotary cutter and the mat, so I bought the rotary cutter and went home. I got out my metal ruler and a piece of masonite board from my Dad to use instead of the mat…you can figure out what happened with the first cut!! Needless to say, I saved up for the mat and a NEW blade!! I finished my log cabin quilt made with brown and rust calicos!! All these years later I still love quilting!! Love your fabric lines and am so happy you’re part of the Moda team…they’re the best!!

I always wanted to learn to quilt. When I was laid off from my job in Aug 2001, I took a ‘Quilted Potholder’ class. I learned the basics in that class. My 1st project was a wall hanging for my niece getting married. Megan and her husband to be Mike were building a log home. It had one large oblong in the middle where I cross-stitched WELCOME and it had smaller square blocks around it. I worked very hard on it as I was a beginner and not very good at measuring and cutting. The wall hangingtuend out pretty good and she displayed it from her mantle. Anne

I made my first quilt when I was 16. I sewed many four inch solid blue and white squares together sandwiched with a leg from a nylon stocking for the batting. I wrote a want ad for a magazine asking for cast off nylon hose and received hundreds including some costume jewelry and a proposal (no, I didn’t take it). I sewed the top rows together by hand but the underside of the quilt rows had to be sewn by hand as there was no other way to do it. It was a heavy quilt and the hand stitching broke often making me so mad that about 15 years later, I sold it at a yard sale for a dollar (it was the first item sold that day) and have regretted it every since. I love your pedal pusher collection and would love to win some. I remember when pedal pushers were summer shorts about the length of what we know call capris. kthurn@bektel.com

  • My mother-in-law inspired me to start quilting. It became a sort of therapy for me after the loss of our oldest son. It’s a wonderful hobby to have, and I really enjoy the times when I get in the groove and sew a lot! My first quilt was a rag quilt, and my first “real” quilt that I made was a Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt for my son. I even top quilted it on my MIL’s Babylock! 🙂

LOVE your new fabric line…the colors are fun and rich and will be fun to work with. Thank you for sharing for quilting story!

I made my first quilt in high school and i didn’t really have a pattern and made things up as I went. Nothing lined up and things were very off. I tied it and still use it now. It was supposed to be a twin size and ended up almost king size…

  • Janie says:

My son still has my first quilt. It is about 15 years old. He still uses it as well. When he told me about that I said he didn’t have to keep it. His response was…keeping it forever Mom, because it is you. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Mary says:

I love your new fabric – such pretty colors! My first several quilts were log cabin ones. The first one was from instructions from a women’s magazine, then it was the Quilt in a Day craze. Yours is very impressive!

  • Diane says:

I made my first quilt when I was 18, for a clue of how long age that was the fabric was polyester and the colors were wild. One of the kids toted it off when they left home.

  • Diane says:

Absolutely love the paint brush quilt! It is just too cute.
My first quilt about 6 years ago is the Five Easy Pieces pattern. My next oldest sister had just started quilting,
we’ve always sewn, but not quilted. She brought the pattern to me on butcher paper, copied from the dearest Aunt whom inspired us to “carry on the family legacy” and become quilters. So I had to “borrow” fat quarters from that sister, since I had no stash, and I stacked and cut those very awkward angled pieces, stitched ’em and it came out beautiful. It’s now in my SUV’s backseat as a very special doggie quilt for my two mini Schnauzers.

  • Dorothy says:

My first quilt was a hand pieced, hand quilted king size sampler that I made for my mother in the early 1970’s. She used it everyday until the day she passed away in 2006. I still have it and every time I look at it it reminds me of her.

I made my first quilt last year, and it was a little blanket for my westie, that she could sleep on. I did not really know how to make pretty corners with the binder, so that looks really bad, so I will probably have to redo it at some point.
My westie also like to guard our house, and every one who walks onto our patio, get “yelled” at. But she is the best dog you could ask for.

My first quilt was a queen size quilt with the bottom rows all flying geese. It’s not finished because the top is about 2″ wider than the bottom (all those geese). I have tried resewing the geese but it only changed the dimensions a small amount. Thanks for the chance to win.

My first quilt was an Eleanor Burns quilt because Quilt In a Day was shown on TV at that time. I recently retired it but still love to look at how much I’ve improved. Apparently I didn’t quite understand the 1/4″ seam! Hahaha!

  • Sally says:

My first quilt was started when I was nine on a summer vacation in Devon England. I made friends with a girl named Kay and her mum was making a hexagon quilt, I must of asked a thousand questions because before I went home she gave me a metal hexagon template and showed me how to piece them. No body in my family sewed so I used travel magazines for the paper shapes and bed sheets for fabrics . I didn’t know how to quilt the top so it remained unfinished. I moved to the USA in 1997 saw an episode of simply quilts and have been happily piecing and finishing quilts ever since . I started a new English paper piecing hexagon quilt last summer and am on the final boarder – lots of great memories. Thanks for prompting so many quilters to take a look back!

Oh wow do I love that color. I think my first quilt was a baby quilt for my son who will be 39 this month. However growing up we always had quilts that were two sheets with batting in between so I learned to tie quilts many years ago. Funny how primitive they look now.

  • Laura B says:

My first quilt was a large blue and pale grey zig zag quilt made from HSTs. I didn’t realize how big I made it, and I am still struggling to quilt it! I have made (start to finish) many others since that first one.

  • kathy peters says:

Your fabric is very pretty! Love it! My first project was made with some blue fabric and mauve fabric. Remember when mauve was a popular color? I don’t know what possessed me to pick that because I certainly can’t say I’m fond of mauve color on anything let alone some fabric. So live and learn and now I enjoy lots of beautiful color combinations and love putting together a quilt.

The first quilt I made was when I was 18. My grandmother was a quilter, and she made her quilts from 5″ squares of pastel polyester. The year I was 18 she died of cancer, and my cousin and I used her sewing machine to make mini quilts from her squares as a memorial to her.

  • Deb F says:

My first quilt was never finished as the class was hand piecing and I just didn’t enjoy it. I am still working on the hand quilting of the sashes. Once in a while I get it out and work on it – I enjoy the hand quilting. But then I get impatient to see quicker results and go back to a current project on the machine. Some day it will get done.

  • Kathy Davis says:

When I was ten years old in the 1962, I asked all my neighbors for fabric and my mom taught me to hand sew a Nine Patch Block. Mom helped me put all the blocks together and Dad built a quilt frame. The best part is the whole family helped quilt, including my 2 older brothers. Lots of sore fingers later, we had a finished quilt and the best part is that I still have it today. Good memories!!

  • Pauline says:

My first quilt was for my first grandchild Tess – my daughter picked out parts of two quilt patterns that she liked and asked if I could combine them – and I did – the body of the quilt was a Puss in the Corner block with white and a variety of pastel colours – alternating with a solid white block. The lower border was appliqued with a mama duck on wheels and her ducklings following behind on wheels. The top border had my granddaughters name appliqued in the middle – appliqued small heart either side. I machine quilted diagonally through the Puss in the Corner blocks, and handquilted outlines of teddy bears, ducks, and butterflies (using cookie cutter for shape) in white on the white squares. I made up the binding using strips of all the pastel fabrics used in making the quilt – it looked great. It has been washed about once a week – sometimes in hot water – for about 8 years and it is still holding together.

  • Angelia L. says:

I am a new quilter and haven’t made my first quilt yet….I have made small projects like a wall hanging, mug rugs and a table topper. Wet Paint is so adorable and Petal Pushers is beautiful! Thank you!

My first quilt was hand pieced 20 years ago, small table topper using satin fabrics – because I just didn’t know any better – haha! My mother decided she loved it and brings it out and puts in on a table every Christmas (it was tree blocks). Gotta love mothers!

  • Stephanie says:

The first quilt I ever made was for my older brother . A two color quilt-white and lavender churn dashes-big ones-traced with templates and cut out with scissors. I quilted it myself on my machine. It was a mess! But I was very proud of it. Later I decided to take a beginners class.

What gorgeous fabrics! The quilt is very pretty too. My first real quilt was one I made for our bed. It was a queen sized trip around the world design. I tied it instead of quilting it. I made pillow shams to match. It began a long journey that I have thoroughly enjoyed! My husband helped pick the fabrics for the quilt so I wouldn’t make it too girly! 🙂 He did well. Now I have a quilt that is mostly appliqué on our bed, which I quilted on my domestic machine. He had me design wall hangings to match. That was fun! Thanks for the giveaway- K-

My first quilt is still not finished 🙂 It’s an english paper pieced hexagon quilt, the hexies are about an inch across and the quilt is going to be big, so it’s a long term project. I am still stitching hexies on the train every day almost 2 years after starting. I have however made several other quilts inbetween, when I need a bit of variety.

My first quilt was for my husband in honor of his Navy retirement. It was a friendship star signature quilt made prior to his retirement so all his shipmates could autograph with best wishes or memories to enjoy for a lifetime. The second quilt was also for my husband; it was a t-shirt quilt made from his brown working t-shirts worn under his camouflage uniforms with the sashing made from a combination of his desserts and his woodlands uniforms. Then I decided I really should LEARN how to quilt!!!!

My first quilt was also adopted by a much loved and now sadly departed pet, my dear old tabby cat, Boo Boo The Brave. It was economy blocks with sashing and a border and was a terrible mixture of cottons, poly-cottons and finishing fabrics as I lived in England and there was no choice. But my husband still still says it is one of his favourites. One of my current cats, Coco, now claims it as hers.

The first quilt I designed was a crayon quilt I made in 1985 for my daughter. She loved it …and we still have it. I started making smaller projects in 1978.

  • Emily says:

I love that Wet Paint quilt – what a cute idea! Thanks for the chance to win.

  • marcella says:

Love your quilt – following directions turned out something pretty fabulous 🙂 My first quilt wasn’t nearly as pretty as yours. It was made from a book of old upholstery samples. It is ugly and heavy and tied with unattractive green yarn. It’s horrible but I love it because it was my first sewing attempt ever.

  • RxQuilter says:

My first quilt was made in a quilting class back in 1993…all in Debbie Mumm prints with fluffy polyester batting…how times have changed!

  • allison pogany says:

My first quilt was a simple patchwork from a layer cake (moda fabrics of course!), bound with pre-cut satin binding and backed with a blue waterproof fabric so we could take it on picnics. It took me months to complete and the stitching is horrendous but I was so proud and we still use it!

  • FLOR CHAVARRIA says:

    Love those fabrics.
My first quilt was for one of my grand children many, many years ago, it was more like a receiving two layer blanket as i did not know about battings and how to, but it was quilted. I still like to make those for quick baby gifts

  • FLOR CHAVARRIA says:

  • Pam J says:

My first quilt was a sampler quilt, pieced and quilted by hand. Of course, being new to quilting, I decided to make it a king size quilt. Sadly, it still isn’t finished. I developed carpal tunnel and can’t hand quilt anymore. It is about half done and I keep trying to decide if machine quilting the second half will ruin the look of the quilt. In the mean time, I have made lots of other quilts though.

  • Vanessa says:

I just stumbled on your website and I have to say I’m totally inspired! I just started quilting a couple years ago; my friend and I signed up for a class and we spent *hours* picking out 7 different fabrics for it. Our instructor quilted it for us when we were done – and I have to say it was the ugliest thing I’d ever seen LOL but I am very proud of my first ever attempt 🙂 Thank you for the chance to win 🙂

  • Julie says:

My first quilt was made when I was in high school a lonnnnnnnnggggggggg time ago!! It is ugly and has all types of fabric in it, but my boys loved it, and I still have it:) It just goes to show you don’t have to be beautiful to be loved!!!!!!!! Which is a good thing:)

  • Wendy says:

Oh, I am sorry for your loss of Rudy – our fur babies are so special.

Love your first quilt! My first quilt was made with my sister who taught me how to quilt – we put together a double bed quilt top over the course of a weekend together! And I was hooked!!!!

Your new fabric line is awesome – love all those colors.

So sorry about your pup, it is hard to lose our furry friends.
My first quilt was a sampler taught at a local quilt shop. The lessons I learned from that teacher were the best foundation I could have asked for. I still have the hand pieced and hand quilted quilt. Would not be my colour choice today but I am proud of the quality of workmanship and owe it to the amazing teacher I had.

  • Lucy Pasifull says:

I adore the colour combinations you use.

I discovered your fabric designs a year or more ago. I’m going to be 60 this year. I started quilting in 1973, as a young bride, and worked for a time a a little quilt shop. Your designs speak to me of those earlier days, when prints were more refined and beauty reigned. I love traditional patterns, and I have a (long time) work in progress using one of your early charm packs. I would LOVE to win your fabrics and make a quilt.

  • Sherry says:

We had a little Scotty “Darby”, who did exactly the same thing from her chair near the living room window, and of course she had her own quilt! She has also passed after many happy years with us. We just adopted a shelter mutt named Finn, and he has so many of Darby’s personality traits! You must get a puppy soon. We waited too long. One of my first quilts was for my dog. They think everything is beautiful ! Love your fabrics!

  • Marie says:

I just discovered this wonderful blog hop, such fun. Thank you. I would love to win the fabrics from your Pedal Pushers collection. I love pastels and then add the navy and red, oh my! • Rhonda B. says:

  • Tammy R says:

Sorry about your little guy. Westies are very special dogs! My first quilt was a little on the disastrous side. I did everything wrong…Everything! I don’t have it anymore. I probably threw it out in shame. But I caught the quilting bug and have quilted happily ever since. Love your fabric! Thanks for the give-away!

  • Keri says:

I helped my Gram quilt as child and suspect that many of my stitches may have been picked out. The first quilt I made was under her tutelage. It was a string quilt with a double bat made for my new husband.

I remember wearing pedal pushers but I’m sure you were too young. My first quilt was a homer hankie quilt that I made four our son in 1987. He still has it.

  • Carmen says:

I hadn’t sewn since I was a kid and randomly decided to try quilting. So, I picked up a pattern book from my local fabric store and just dove right in with no knowledge, direction, or plan! It took me what seemed like forever, but I did it. Even taught myself to free motion. That was only 4 years ago, but it seems like an eternity. That quilt is still my favorite and it’s fun to see just how far I’ve come with each additional quilt I make!

  • Robin says:

I think the new Pedal Pushers line is just SO sweet!

My first quilt was a baby quilt for a friend. Our second babies were due within a month of each other (mine first) but hers was born a month early and I decided to make her little boy a quilt. I bought the fabric and tied it and had it finished just before my little boy was born three days later.

  • Sarah says:

I made my first quilt for my then 2 year old’s big girl bed. It was moda fabric. I had no idea how to get a 1/4 inch seam and so lets just say it turned out beautiful but maybe a little small for a twin. It works well now because she is in the top bunk and you don’t have to worry about it blocking the light for her brother.

  • Melissa says:

My first quilt was a scrappy trip around the world. The completed top has been languishing in my craft room ever since and I am determined to finally quilt it before the end of the year.

My first quilt, in 1991 was a log cabin, then I tried to machine quilt it. It was king size, and did not turn out well, but I used it for a while, just because I made it. I now have my quilts machine quilted by professionals.

I started following you on pinterest. My first quilt was for my first child. 25 yrs ago. Time flies!

  • Tori says:

My first quilt was a really simple lap size Around the World pattern. I made it 13 years ago for my grandma who had terminal cancer. My college roommate had offered to teach me to quilt, so we picked out some pansy fabric (my grandma’s favorite flower) and some coordinating yellows, purples and greens, and I sewed it in our tiny dorm room. My grandma passed away not long after and I was always really glad I had decided to make my first quilt for her. I know it meant a lot to her. My mom has it now.

  • Cynthia says:

My first quilt is a quilt made at a Saturday Sampler class I took when pregnant with my last child. It sits on our bed now and that child just turned 11. Fun memories!

  • Deanna Ellett says:

Love your fabrics. My first quilt was a “trial”. Picked out some fabrics out of a bin my daughter had given me. After making several blocks I ran out of one of the fabrics so I just used the other fabric to finish. The end result wasn’t too pretty because the pattern didn’t work out because of running out of the one fabric, but I did finish it and fell in love with quilting. Thanks for the chance to win.

Love your pedal pusher line of fabric! I made my first quilt about 30 years ago for a friend who was pregnant. I cross stitched mother goose on gingham fabric and made it into a quilt. I took a class to learn how and we had to use scissors to cut everything. We sure have come a long way.

  • Oh this fabric is so pretty!! Thanks for the close up shot! Going on my list!

  • Pam says:

My first quilt was a baby quilt for my first daughter. I saw an Amish bow tie baby quilt on the cover of Country Living. I was smitten because it was photographed about 20 miles from our lake house which is situated on a tiny island in northern Indiana. We didn’t have electricity at the time so we went to a wonderful Amish store for kerosene lamp wicks and well leathers.
I went to the library and checked out books. I made it with cardboard templates. And set in seams! It’s a wonder I persisted! I used puffy batting (this was 1986). But I still have it. I learned more watching PBS and Georgia Bonesteel and Eleanor Burns.

Now we have electricity on the island. And my baby is now a pediatrician!

I love fat quarters and layer cakes!

  • My first quilt was terrible! I had no idea what I was doing and used a mixture of cotton, poly cotton, calico – whatever was in my mother’s cupboard. I made up the pattern myself and folded over the backing for a self binding. It is so bad that I actually love this quilt.

  • Deb Gipe says:

My 1st quilt, which is still in use 15yrs later, a rail fence, that I took a class for…and ended up tying with yarn-gasp!!! LOL p.s.LOVE the Pedal Pushers line!!

  • KarenInTucson says:

I made my first quilt during the summer of 1996. I was a red/white/blue Irish Chain. I learned to measure twice and cut once! Because I didn’t, it is smaller than I intended but I was really pleased with the result. I did my first machine quilting and then learned a walking foot was a necessity. I also learned about batting after the fact. I haven’t stopped making quilts and really enjoy the process.

When I look back on my first quilt, I can hardly believe it became a finished product. It truly was a wonder! I literally looked at a photo and wondered how it was made, then proceeded to guess my way through it. No quilting tools, only scissors, thread, and a sewing machine.

My first quilt was a hand-pieced, hand-quilted sampler quilt in peach, green and white. After one block, I put it aside thinking I really did not like hand piecing. About 10 years later I picked it up again and finished it. I keep it on a quilt rack in our bedroom to remind me of the joy of finishing a project. However, all of my quilts now are done on a machine!

My first “quilt” was a memory t shirt quilt for my basketball fanatic son. He was in 8th grade and asked if I would make him a blanket from his basketball shirts. I fussy cut around the design on the shirt and zigzagged it, crazy patch style to a bed sheet. It’s not properly constructed but he treasures it at age 31 now. By the way, I have since then taken a few classes and am still learning proper quilting g techniques. Thank you

What a beautiful line, and looks quite different I think than your previous lines. Lovely!! I’m sorry for the loss of your sweet doggie – I lost mine in 2011 and we still grieve from time to time, but mostly I remember the funny things he did. On occasion I see him come in while I’m in the shower, very strange, but I love the memory.

My first quilt was made using the block Clayton’s Choice. It was before rotary cutters, rulers, mats. I cut a template out from a paper grocery bag and used scissors to cut the fabric (no fabric marker). Needless to say, it wasn’t perfect. But it was still a lovely comfy quilt.

I love your colored pencil quilt! My first quilt was …awkward. It was a king size trip around the world that I marked and cut by hand. Heartfelt condolences on Rudy’s passing. We have experienced that in our family, and are facing it again. I try to remind myself that the depth of the pain I’m feeling is just a reflection of how dearly we love them.

Hmm I made my first quilt when I was about 19, I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing and the only batting I knew about was polyester! I still have the quilt and my children love it because it’s so squidgy but I cringe at the sight of it!

Since then, I’ve made three more quilts of various sizes.

I was thrilled when my oldest niece (now in her late 30s) recently posted pictures of quilts she and her husband had inherited from his grandmother and great-grandmother. She also showed some quilts received (newer) from her side of the family, stating that her very favorite was her Star Blanky — a baby quilt made for her by her Auntie Brenda. This was the first quilt I ever made, shortly after the bicentennial and using a pattern from a 1976 McCall’s publication.

  • Charlotte says:

My first quilt was a QAYG baby quilt for my only great granddaughter. Finished early 2014. I’ve made a flannel and fleece twin size rag quilt for my niece. Finished spring 2014. • Susan the Farm Quilt says:

My first quilt never got finished…I was hand piecing a lone star quilt and on the last star point I needed 3 diamonds of the fabric and only had two. I can see in my mind the tote this quilt is hiding in…but I can’t find the tote! That was 28 years ago. I made my first finished quilt almost 7 years ago when I got a granddaughter, so I had to make one for her!

  • KC says:

Hello! I love your newest line, it is so cheerful! Thanks for the chance to win. Let’s see, my very first-ever quilt I made in 1989, at the ripe old age of 19. Nobody in my family quilted, and I had no instruction. But I was a seamstress who worked in a fabric store. Lots of those ’80’s calicos had such a pioneer vibe to them that the idea to make a “Pioneer” quilt took hold and wouldn’t let go. So I made a King-sized quilt out of nothing but 4-inch squares (as if Pioneers had king-sized beds! HA!) I had no idea where to go from there, so I just layered it with a cotton-poly batting and a muslin backing, and tied the darn thing. I hated that batting, but 25 years, and many quilts later, I still love that quilt! Just this year I had to repair one of the seams which ripped from years of abuse by a careless manly-man. I had planned to whip-stitch it and then applique a big flower over it, but once I whip-stitched it, it just added to the original pioneer vibe. Now I love it even more!

My first quilt was made with my grandmother. When I was a newlywed, I made a queen size comforter for our bed. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, but the quilt top came together nicely….and then I was stuck! Grandma stepped in and showed me how to add (high loft!) batting and the backing and then we tied it together. Such special memories! Thanks for asking!

Love the Pedal Pushers fabrics! I made my first quilt in Sept, 2001. I was inspired by all the quilt shops across the country with the patriotic quilts at that sad time. However, my first quilt was a 30’s reproduction quilt, not a red, white and blue!

My fav is FQ. My first quilt… I just got a silly idea one day to try (my creative process always starts with a silly idea to try something new) …

Looked at some pictures on Internet, then picked fabrics from my stash, started the top with phinwheel blocks, then added little triangles around and so on… the top was over 100X100, looked really great, then I did rather simple quilting, and that was it. The only thing – as I obviously had no clue at all – it was a two layr sandwitch, with NO batting in the middle! LOL At least now I try to squeeze some batting in between layers 😀

  • barb h. says:
