My new adventure…

4 months ago I quit my job.
2 months after that,
I put all of my stuff into a storage unit in New Jersey.

and then last month,
I drove 3,100 miles across the country
(camping along the way).

(I was with my significant-other, Atul… and truth be told, he did most of the driving.)
And we’ve set up shop in beautiful San Francisco.

And this was all because of an idea that we had 8 months prior…

The idea has been in the back of my head for quite some time now. Because, over the years I’ve evolved into quite the thrifty shopper …Mostly because I wind up ruining (and/or) losing everything of mine that’s expensive. (Like when I nicked my white leather Coach purse with a blue ballpoint pen… or when I lost my Ralph Lauren sunglasses in the ocean at Myrtle Beach… or even YESTERDAY when I melted my brand new silk-ish blouse with an iron that was turned up too high… the fate of expensive purchases is generally pretty bleak when they are in my hands.) And it’s this inability of mine (to take care of the stuff that I love) that has lead to the development of my “super-hero-esque” ability to bargain-shop.

Buying things on sale is mostly a waiting game. For example, that cool RETRO-JADE winter coat (see below) that I like from J.Crew is $325 right now …But if I wait until February, that sucker will most likely be mine for the low price of around 150 bucks.

I’ve found the key to successful deal-hunting… is keeping my options open. I generally try to watch three different versions of the same type of item… (In the example below, I’m watching 3 cool trench coats.)

And as soon as one of them drops within my price range,>

I’ll pounce on it.
Because if I wait too long (after it goes on sale)…
my size will be long since gone.
AND/OR
the remaining colors will be something gross:
(see example below)

Over the years I’ve refined my DEAL-HUNTING technique.
And it is as follows:

But in all seriousness…
The entire process is a super big pain in the butt.

So, as the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention…

Let me give you the back-story to all of this… It began about 8 months ago when Atul, was starting to get bored with his day job. He was a computer scientist at NEC labs working on data center networks & cloud computing (whatever the heck that is)… so it’s easy to see how the boredom set in. 🙂 Anyway, after he came to terms with the fact that he needed to move on to something more interesting, he quit his job and began brainstorming about the next big idea that would change the world.

Right around the time that Atul began his quest for an epiphany… I was embarking on a quest of my own. And that was to buy a new watch. I had my sites set on a Nooka watch that was originally $300. Well… after a few diligent weeks of watching this item… the prices dropped and I bought that puppy for 75 bucks!

Can you believe it??

Yeah, neither could I. It was some of my best work yet.

These three events happened to coincide.

  1. My annoyance with the roundabout, multi-step, time-consuming “deal-hunting-process”
  2. My excitement over my brand new watch (that I saved a whopping 225 bucks on) and
  3. Atul’s quest for the answer to life, the universe, and everything… *42*

And it was this combination of events… that led to our big idea.

Essentially, we’ve built an online service
that will simplify all of the chores of online shopping…
And here’s what we’re doing.

Imagine using this for Christmas shopping… you can bookmark all of your gift ideas in one place! You can also set up price notifications for these gifts (at the prices you’re wanting to pay for them), If the price drops to the level you want, we’ll let you know right when it happens! It’s also a great place for you to compare items ACROSS stores.
There are LOTS of possibilities… and we can guarantee that you’ll save both money AND time with your holiday shopping this year.

So… where are we in our quest for better shopping? We’ve built Shelf, and we support 12 stores (Express, Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, J.Crew, Abercrombie, New York and Company, Ann Taylor, The Loft… just to name a few). We’re adding 2-3 stores every week, so not to worry if you don’t see your store.

Today, is the first day that we’re opening up the doors to Shelf and I would like to personally invite you all to try it! You’ll be the very first set of users on a product that will hopefully go down in shopping history. 🙂
And, as promised… there’s a pretty hefty give-away here… There are two ways that you can win one of the THREE $75 gift certificates to the Fat Quarter Shop…

1. We would like for you all to try out the site, beta-getshelf.herokuapp.com/… If Shelf sounds like something you’d like to use, now is your chance to help us shape it into a product you’d love. Tell us the stores that you want us to add next… send us a list of features that you want to see added. Tell us what confused you… and what parts you loved. We want to hear everything! So, go over to the site and sign up as a new user, then, just play around with it. When you get done, stop back here and drop us a quick comment about what you think!

2. IF YOU’RE NOT A SHOPPER, don’t worry, you can still win one of the gift certificates! I’m sure that you know some people who like to shop online… Please tell them about Shelf and try your hardest to get them to sign up. You could also post about it on your Facebook wall maybe? 🙂 When you’re done, just drop us a quick comment to say that you’ve done your best to help out the shoppers of the world.

And… you never know… this little website app might get passed around… from quilter to quilter… and take off like the next Facebook! Ha! Well, I can dream, right?

We’ll announce the winners on the 15th! And we’ll be taking comments up through the 14th. So tell your friends!

This entry is already WAY too long, sorry about that, but let me finish by thanking you for stopping by! My mission is to make Shelf an amazingly useful product, and I sincerely feel that if you try it out, you’re going to love it!!

If you missed the link to Shelf… Click here. You can also “Like” Shelf on Facebook here (because we’ll be offering MANY more free-fabric-incentives in the weeks to come!)

P.S. Shelf doesn’t work on iPad yet. This is next on our to-do list.

P.P.S. Some of you have said that when you sign up through Facebook, it pops up a message about logging you into “Simple-Journey-2558”. We’re not sure how to change this! Ha! But that is in fact Shelf.

P.P.P.S. You’ll need to click on the Sign Up button no matter what, if its your first time on Shelf. If you’ve already signed up, then click on Login.

What an awesome idea!!! Will pass along to my daughters and others who I know are shoppers. Thanks for your innovative new shopping ” Shelf”.

  • Sharon T says:

Congrats on your new venture! I love the sound of it, but live in Highfields, QLD Australia, so may not find it that useful? I wish you the best of luck! Please enter me in your competition – I LOVE your stuff 🙂

Hi again , I went to face book and liked and then shared on my facebook. I know a lot of bargain shoppers that are friends and they will love this site.!!

  • Dorian says:

I am not a shopper, and I am not on Facebook..yes, I’m a hermit 😉 But I just wanted to say what a neat idea you have here. And I hope that it takes off for you and turns into a huge hit!

  • rebecca says:

I think we’ll hear about your success in the future. I will spread the word. Great idea!!

  • ada shave says:

All the best in your new venture.

  • Lee says:

What a great idea! I sent the link to my sisters and SIL who all love to shop – they usually shop for me as I do not, but this might make it easier. The demo portion was not working correctly and I could not sign up – I will try again later.
I think American Eagle and Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn would be wonderful 🙂 thanks and Good Luck!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Lee, Sorry about that! And thanks for pointing this out! We went back and looked at our code, and it turned out we didn’t have the video loaded correctly. We’ve since fixed the issue, and you should be able to see it now. If you want to try it again, let me know how it goes! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Julie A. says:

Good luck !!!! I am not a shopper but my mom is so I have passed this information on to her. Thanks for a wonderful giveway also.

  • Will try Shelf. Thanks for the chance to win some lovely FQS fabric! 🙂

  • Hi – glad you moderate comments. Wanted to privately send you comments on trying to sign on to Shelf. I couldn’t get signing onto Shelf with my FB account to work. First an odd code screen came up with my name and a number assigned to it, asking for a P.W. I bypassed that and then I couldn’t drag and drop the Shelf it icon. It gave me lots of instructions to do something in Google chrome which I didn’t understand. I promise I’ll give it another go soon. I’m a big bargain hunter too. 🙂

    • Lauren says:

      Hey Karen,

I actually decided to just post your comment in case anyone else had the same issues. The FB problem… we’re still working on. But we think we know what the issue is. As for the Shelf icon, there have been a few people who found this confusing, so I’m going to make a quick video that shows how to do it. The popup that you saw (showing Google Chrome) was actually attempting to show you how to use it on 5 different browsers. So if you scroll down, you’ll see how to do it in Internet Explorer, or Firefox, etc. I can see where that would be confusing though, so I’m thinking a video would be the most helpful! Hopefully you’ll get a chance to try it again later on in the week!

  • Vickie says:

Shelf sounds like the best idea since a pocket on a shirt !

  • tracy_a says:

I am in love with this idea! I could see adding some home decor and/or kids shops (because that’s my phase of life – and also have gifts to buy in those shops).

I am so happy to see Opera as a supported browser 🙂

One comment – on my screen (laptop 1366×788 resolution) – the signup LOOKS like I have to signin with facebook – so I almost clicked away – but then scrolled down and saw I could do a site-specific login. Is there a way to popp that up or something so that I see both options on the first screen?

    • Lauren says:

Hey Tracy, that’s a great suggestion. We are going to be fixing that this week. Many people have commented on that. And at first, I wasn’t sure why they were missing the login boxes. Actually, I didn’t realize what the problem was until your comment. So thank you! I now know how to fix this! Check back later if you don’t mind and see what you think!

We’re definitely going to be adding kids stores soon. And though we’re focusing on apparel right at the moment, home goods will be the next area that we tackle!

  • Mary Jo says:

You have a great idea here! Wishing you the best in your new endeavor!

  • Tracy says:

I’VE ADDED SHELF TO MY BLOG

  • What an amazing idea! I have liked Shelf on my facebook page because I know my daughter and my many nieces are avid online shoppers at those stores you are currently supporting on the site. Congratulations to you both and best of luck! Thank you for sharing.

  • I love this idea! I am a stalker-style shopper like you described, so I can see myself using something like this, and I signed up. I know you’re new and adding more stores, but the first thing I notice is that these are not stores I usually shop at, except for Old Navy. Is the plan to continue to focus on just clothing and accessories? For me personally, I would love to use a site like this more for things like housewares, electronics, toys, books… The stores I would most like to see are Amazon, Target, and Lands End.

I will play around with it some more and look to see which new stores get added. Good luck with your new venture!

    • Lauren says:

Hey, we’re adding mainly shopping stores right now, sorry! But check back in about 6 months, we might have expanded into these other areas by then! Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

  • Shawna says:

This is an amazing idea. I’m looking forward to using it as I do my Christmas shopping. Thanks!

  • susan F. says:

How about Coldwater Creek as a new store? Wishing you both lots of luck on your new adventure!

  • Deb Fox says:

Wow! That is really cool! I am honestly NOT a shopper but I know lots of people who are and will spread the word! Thanks and good luck!

  • debby warthen says:

How cool!~ personal web shopper! Can’t wait to try it! already liked it on facebook.

  • Patty D says:

This is a fantastic idea! I am off to take a look at the site now and will share with others!

  • Toni Anne Potter says:

I’m telling my sister about your new shopping site. She is the QUEEN of bargain shopping. I think she’s going to love it. Maybe you 2 were split a birth, she’d LOVE your system of shopping. Good luck on your venture! ;-> Toni Anne

  • Mary Val says:

I am a BIG time bargain hunter from way back. Started serious bargain hunting when my kids were little. It’s a way to help ends meet on a budget when the kids are consuming your entire income, lol! Plus, while I am willing to pay for quality, I am *not* willing to pay for advertising. Which is what you’re doing when you buy the big ticket name brand stuff. I buy all my coats, all my grandchildren’s coats, in January on sale. If it’s not on sale, I don’t buy it. Sometimes circumstances dictate otherwise of course, on a rare occasion I pay full price, but that is for something exceptional, or a truly exceptional occasion. Like the mother-of-the-bride dress when my son was married last year. I’ll be checking out Shelf and sending a link to it to my daughter and my daughter-in-law. My daughter, having been trained by the Mistress, is quite the bargain hunter. My daughter-in-law is learning. Thanks!

    • Lauren says:

Hahah! Thank you Mary! That would be great if you can pass us along. And I totally agree about paying full price. I’m generally on a budget, so it’s a necessity for me too. But I’ve always said if I happen to make money one day…. I will still bargain-shop. Because its really the principal. Things ALWAYS go on sale. Coupons are coming every single day… and there’s no reason to buy something at full price.

The other day, I had an interview that I needed to buy a dress for, and I went to Express… and I bought it for $100 at full price. This is the first time I’d done that in years… it felt like I was selling my soul! Hahah! Especially since express has a billion sales going on every day. (And I know I could have gotten it at half price if I wouldn’t have been in such a super big hurry!)

  • Donna says:

Interesting! I will follow along on FB to watch this grow.

  • Wanda says:

This is so cool! My daughter will love it. She’s totally an online shopper. Can I suggest a couple of stores to add? Anthropology, Coldwater Creek, Northstyle. Will let you know when my nineteen year old gives the site a go and her comments.

  • Barbara says:

Great idea! I have signed up using my iPad and bookmarked your site through Safari. I have tried logging in to use the site but nothing happens, I stay on the same login page. Can you use your IPad or do I need to be on a computer?

    • Lauren says:

Hey Barbara, the problem was the iPad. I didn’t realize how many people were using iPads these days! But apparently a lot of people had this issue. We are adding in iPad compatibility this week. And it should be available soon!

  • sue bennett says:

this is very interesting. I am going to check it out and like you on Facebook. Good luck with this.

  • PattyK says:

Awesome idea! Great time-saver. I would love to see childrens’ stores and home & garden stores on the list. Wishing you all the success you deserve with this project.

  • LeAnn says:

Good Luck! What a great idea! I’m not the world’s biggest on-line shopper, but I will certainly pass the word along.

  • bonnie says:

great idea. I don’t buy clothes online, I like to try things on to make sure I like how they look on me, but I do shop all the time for craft, sewing, quilting and painting supplies.

  • bonnie says:

    I liked on Face book

  • Brianna says:

So very happy and excited for your new endeavor! Good luck in SF and can’t wait to see what you come up with next. 🙂

  • Vickie E says:

This is a great concept. I tried logging in and signing up…but it was not working this morning. Will try again later 🙂

  • What a VERY neat idea!! Love how you suggested it for Christmas Shopping … I hope this takes off really well for you!! Love the whole story behind it too – it’s something I can see happening here – but, we have many many intensives to stick with our Gov’t jobs up here.
I’ll happily play around and check out your site – not sure how it’ll work with Canadian shoppers – as the shipping to Canada can very so much from site to site – but worth drooling over the other goodies online 🙂

  • rosa says:

Good luck in SF.I `ve never bought clothes on line but never too late to start!

  • Dianne says:

That’s a great idea! Can you add some sporting shops as well, and electronics would be great. Good luck on your new adventure.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Dianne, we’re actually going to be adding other areas like electronics probably later. We’re first tackling apparel stores, which will probably keep us busy for a bit. 🙂

  • Barbara says:

I love the concept, the graphics and everything were clear and easy to use but you would need to add Women’s World and Lane Bryant for it to work for me! Maybe you could add diet plans, too! Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Gitte says:

BRILLIANT idea. I’m not a great shopper – prefer the internet so something like this is very useful (live in the UK though). I also would like to remind everybody that even for SALE items the company makes money and I find it insulting to have to pay full price knowning this. So best of luck and hopefully it will expand beyong the US.

  • Amy z. says:

I can’t wait to tell my sisters and girlfriends about this! We are all bargain hunters and love to shop! I logged in through Facebook and had a look around your site. I really like the layout, it’s clean, simple to navigate and fresh and modern. I love all the options to sort and compare items you have. And I love the graphs! It’s nice to look at and get a realistic picture of the price fluctuations. I would LOVE to see the app for iPad and android. On the deals and promos page will it show those special coupons that come only to rewards members, card holders etc…? I would love to see nordstroms and American eagle added (for my sis-in-law) as well. Brilliant idea and best of luck on your new adventure! Can’t wait to keep using it!

    • Lauren says:

Thank you thank you Amy Z! That’s such a nice comment! We are currently working on the iPad compatible version and that will hopefully be ready this week. If you want, Like us on facebook if you want to keep up with the progress! That’s a great point about the rewards members. We haven’t really thought about that yet, but it is now on our to-do list. American Eagle will be added next week. And then the department stores will come a little later after we hire a few developers!

Thanks for stopping by and posting such a nice comment!

  • LeAnne L says:

What a great idea. I don’t buy clothes online, but if you could add quilt/fabric stores, I’d use your site all the time. I will definitely tell my SIL about Shelf. She loves to shop.

  • Viv says:

    GREAT IDEA….GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Jocelyn says:

Shelf sounds like a very cool idea. I’ll check it out. For some reason I’m having a hard time finding it on Facebook but will try looking again.

  • Jane says:

What a brilliant idea! I’m not a huge shopper but I have several people in mind that love to shop. I’ll be letting them know about “shelf”. ENjoy your adventure.

  • Teresa says:

Brilliant idea! I have tons of “shopping friends” that will love this…Best of Luck!

  • I signed up and went to Old Navy to try it. I picked out a pair of sweats and size and then I hit the shelf it button and it kept telling me to pick size, even though I did. Then I went to click on another button on old navy and nothing happened, so either a bug in the program or with old navy and using them with a mac?

Great idea, but I do use something similar on amazon, using the wish list. I add things I want and wait for a big price drop.

    Debbie

    • Lauren says:

Hey Debbie, we haven’t meant to ignore this comment. But we’re figuring this out tonight and then we’ll get back with you! Thanks for letting us know!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Debbie, We checked on this, and I had the same problem with Old Navy! Sorry!! The problem is fixed now though. And so if you feel like trying again, let me know what happens if you don’t mind! Thanks!

  • Deb G. in VA says:

What a great idea! I’m not an online shopper, but I will pass it on to my friends who are. Good luck with your new endeavor!

  • Trisch says:

I liked you on Facebook and also left a comment. I will definitely be spreading the word to my shopping friends, as I am under a shopping curfew at the moment. (self imposed) Thanks for the chance to win!!! Great idea!

  • Marilee says:

You have to make it iPad accessible. I do all my shopping on my pad.

  • Lou says:

Great idea! See if you can get Garnet Hill to sign on…..

  • Becky Greene says:

What an innovative idea and a beautiful interface. I especially loved the rainblow splash page with all the clothing items.

I had some problems with the site though. I was trying to put a pair of pants from the Gap on my shelf and a message popped up (overlayed on the GAP web page which made it very difficult to read) that said that I wasn’t logged in and to “Click Go To Your Shelves” button to log in. Hmmmm, I was logged in and I didn’t see a “Go To Your Shelves” button anywhere. I logged out of Shelf, logged back in, and went back to the Gap using the list of stores, but the same thing happened.

I think this is a wonderful idea and would love to see it expended to other products, too. Keep up the good work and I bet you will have a hit on your hands!

  • Susan G says:

I’m not much of a shopper, but I have a daughter, who just happens to live near you – that’s right, in beautiful San Francisco – and she’s a SHOPPER! But even more than that she LOVES a good bargain. I’m forwarding this info on to her. It shounds like something she’d really love.

  • vicki boschman says:

So very exciting! I have ‘liked it’ on FB and as noted by others this should be a huge success. Best of luck. I know a few dedicated internet shoppers to steer your way. Loved your post.

  • Dana Gaffney says:

Genius, pure genius I love this idea. I’ve signed up and started playing around, so far I haven’t come across anything I don’t understand. I did start a shelf for dresses, but I’m not seeing the dress label show up. I need to spend more time with it, but of course, I got lost in shopping. LOL.
I’m off to tell my other shopaholic friends and family about this, I know a couple of them are going to adore this. Thanks and good luck.

    • Lauren says:

Thank you Dana! Hey, if you still didn’t get the dress to show up under Dresses, you can actually edit the category from the item page. If you click on the item, it will open up a drop-down panel. On top of the image is a button that says “edit Categorization here”. On that screen you can check off the categories that you want. And uncheck the categories that don’t apply. Then click “Finished Editing” Let me know if it doesn’t work!

  • Donna Baker says:

good luck on your new adventure! I am not much of a shopper but when I do shop, I ALWAYS bargain hunt because I REFUSE to pay full price for ANYTHING! will be checking back to see what stores you add (Can you add some stores that include PLUS SIZE clothing??!??) I also liked you on FB and posted a link to your page too!! hopefully you will get more traffic!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Donna! Thank you for posting about us! And “liking” us! We’ll be adding stores over the next few weeks. Maybe 2 or 3 per week. And as soon as we do, we’ll make sure to post an update on our FB page. We will be adding Lane Bryant soon. Let me know any others you want to see! I’ll add them to our spreadsheet, and we’ll make sure to get to them!

  • Flo Burton says:

What a great idea! I’m an online shopper and this makes it so convenient. Best of luck with your new endeavor!

  • Connie F says:

What a great idea! I will let my daughters know about this. I don’t have time right now to check it out, hopefully tonight. Let me know when it works on iPad.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Connie, Everyone has been asking about the iPad! I think we underestimated how many people used it! But we’ll be adding compatibility for the iPad this week. Like us on facebook if you want to keep up with the progress! We’ll make sure to put up a post as soon as its ready!

  • Deanna says:

So how cool is that! I signed up and have placed a few things on my shelf. Wondering what other stores you’re thinking to work with? I’ll have to go into the other features and set up some deals. Thanks for the hard work and I hope it works out for you!!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Deanna, we’re going to be adding ALL stores. Ha! At some point. Let us know which ones you want to see and we’ll make sure to add it to our spreadsheet. We’re prioritizing additional stores based on the feedback from this blog hop. We’ll also be posting our new stores to FB. So Like us on facebook if you want to keep up with the progress!

  • Margaret says:

WOW! Shelf is great. I’m going to pass it along to my daughter who will definitely be interested (as she does all that shopping-lookin-waiting for the price to go down), too. Great plan!!

  • Margaret says:

I forgot to say in my previous email, “Good luck with Shelf!!”

  • Miranda says:

Great idee, I’ m a huge shopper myself, especially those expensive Italian brands….
To bad it doesn’ t work on iPad yet, you should have started with modern media I think, so sorry I can ‘to try it out for you
One question, will shops you use also ship outside the USA ?
Wish you lots of succes!! Miranda

    • Lauren says:

Hey Miranda, Not to worry, we’ll be adding in ipad support this. week! Like us on facebook if you want to keep up with the progress! I don’t know about shipping outside of the USA, we’ll need to look into this. A bunch of people have been asking this same thing!

  • Katy says:

I signed up! Great business idea. This will really be useful. I would love to see Anthropologie on the list. They have great sales. I also like you on Facebook. Congrats on the big move. Good for you to take a leap!

  • WOW, This is impressive. I am sold. I would love to buy things only marked down to as little as possible. Thanks for sharing 😉

  • Beth G says:

Shelf sounds like a great idea! I honestly don’t have the time it takes to constantly track an item that I want until the price breaks! I do the best that I can, but this sounds like a fantastic idea! I’ve signed-up, but haven’t had time yet to “play around” with Shelf. I will let you know if I have any “brilliant” ideas for you!

    b.

  • Clever! I signed up using Facebook. I hope you can add Woolrich to your store line up–I live in Northern MN and use a lot of their products!

  • Robin Chapa says:

Shelf is AMAZING!!!!!! I don’t believe it! There is NOTHING I would change…. but I’m wondering….. can you add department stores? Like Macy’s? Nordstrom? Is that possible? Or what about specialty stores like Coach? Brighton? I love love love it!

    • Lauren says:

Coach is already on our list. Department stores are by far, the most requested item… but they’re sort of huge… so that will come a little later when we’re able to hire one more developer. But definitely before the Christmas shopping season! So make sure to check back!

  • Robin Chapa says:

To help the other shoppers in the world, I’m sending a link to your site via email RIGHT NOW to all of my “shoppy” friends. Yay! This is SO cool! I hate paying full price for ANYTHING– you guys are brilliant!

  • Judith H says:

What a cool idea! Will let my shopping friends now about this! Good Luck!!

  • Jandy says:

Wishing you great success with this venture!!

I love this concept! I have a college-age daughter who is just at the stage that she needs to start buying long-term investment type clothing and this will be great! Thanks!

I think this is the coolest thing ever! I love a bargain too and you know everything goes on sale eventually! Thank you for creating this! Wicked excited about it! I would love to see Gymboree and some kids sites too.

I would love to win one of the gift cards!

    Thanks!!!

    • Lauren says:

Great feedback! I didn’t even think about kid stores, but that’s a great point. Kids clothes are expensive, and short-lived (since they’re growing and what not. 🙂 )

We’ll add this to the list!

  • Lorraine Lewis says:

This sounds too good to be true! Awesome and good luck. I hope you get stores like Bealls, Belk, Kohls and the like. Good luck with your venture.

  • Janell says:

You have a terrific idea with ‘Shelf!’ Will be passing your shopping tool idea along to daughters until I see some of the stores that I shop at!

  • Jenelle Boxberger says:

ha ha.. I can’t believe I read your whole blog. I usually give up about half way through. This was very interesting and sounds like a great idea. I’m not an on-line shopper YET. But with the price of gas I just might turn into one. Love the bow-tie mini quilt, thanks for the pattern. I like to make small projects. Here’s hoping I win some of the fun fabrics.

  • Jenelle Boxberger says:

Let me clarify — I didn’t mean I ususally only read half of your blog, what I mean is when I read anyones blog if it is long and I’m short on time then it is a quick scan. But yours held my interest through the entire thing. Congrats on your wonderful idea.

  • Becky S says:

Great idea. I don’t do a lot of online shopping, but I will pass the site on to my friends who do.
Best of luck with your new venture! Thanks

  • Rebecca says:

Incredible idea. Not much into clothing at this point in my life but sure follow prices on books and fabrics.
Hard to check all the different sites to see what new lines have been released and who has them, to say nothing of the variety in price. Think anyway some of the internet fabric stores would sign up?

  • Judith says:

This is an amazing idea. I am going to tell my daughters about this. They are big internet shoppers.
    Wow!

  • Julie T. says:

Great idea! I am not much of a clothes shopper anymore, although everyone needs clothes and I do like to get a good deal. I usually wait until they go on sale, too. That worked when I was younger and thinner. Now that I have gotten (a bit) bigger, not so much. Seems everyone else has gotten that way too. But it is tireing to look and keep track of prices. Anyway, I am looking for non-mainline items right now. Seal-a-meals, excalibur dehydrators, and upright freezers. Yep. Putting in the garden. It may kill me yet.
Doubt that will help you. But I wish you well and much success. You never know where you end up when you follow inspiration. And San Francisco Bay Area is beautiful. Make sure you take a trip over to the Napa Valley, where I used to live. I love the fall the best when you can see the beautiful colors of the grape leaves. Go to Artesa winery. It takes you up ontot the top of a hill and overlooks the valley. A vertible patchwork of autumn colors!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Julie, thanks for the San Fran advice! We have been total hermits since moving here. Yesterday we walked over to the windy part of Lombard Street for the first time which was cool! I can’t wait to take a vacation though after we get this project into a stable state! We’ll definitely be checking out Napa and Sonoma! And Aretesa winery!

  • Kathy says:

I LOVE on-line shopping living in a rural area, far from the shopping centers of big cities, it’s great.
I absolutely to browse the fat quater shop. I browse, but always end up finding something I can’t live without!
Good luck with your new life

  • C says:

What a fantantic idea–I will be using Shelf for Christmas shopping this year. Thank you!

  • Michelle says:

This is a brilliant idea! I love bargains! Loving the stores and ease of use!

  • Miranda says:

Nice. I know plenty of shoppers that will try this. Ok marketing away I go! All the best. Thanks for the chance to win too!

  • Lynda H says:

I just sent my daughter a heads up – she lives in the interior of Alaska, and has one year old triplets and is one of the worlds greatest internet shopper. Her pet peeve (as with all Alaskans who internet shop) is the shipping costs – believe it or not, a lot of sites consider Alaska outside the “continental” U.S. and charge international rates. A lot of sites add $10. to U.S. shipping costs. Hawaii lives with the same issue. Long story short, at some time it would be good to add shipping information to your website if it is not already available…..just saying

    • Lauren says:

Hey Lynda, I’m so glad you mentioned that. We actually are doing this already! It’s just a little hidden. If you open up an item info page (by clicking on an item in your shelf”. You’ll see the “Savings”… underneath that is the “Price”… and then underneath that is the “Shipping Price” and “Promo Codes”. Sometimes the shipping info shows up as “n/a”. But we’re working on that. Soon it will tell you exactly what shipping is… and it sounds like your daughter would be interested in Shipping-Related-Coupons. If she goes to the promo dashboard, she can filter the coupons by “Shipping Related Deals”! Hopefully that will help!

  • mary salmon says:

    You and a genius!

When I put in my password, it was not secure.

I would like to see Juicy Couture and high end appliances or things for the home. I like garden and cooking items…I love Ann Taylor! Thanks so much!
I also buy organic and top of the line pet products…
    Mary

    • Lauren says:

Hey Mary, You’re right, we do need to do make it an https website. We haven’t done this quite yet because we’re not really collecting info from anyone that is overly sensitive. But in the future, we definitely need to make this secure. I talked with Atul, who is handling the development, and he said that we will do this by the middle of the week! So try to check back!

Juicy Couture is on our list! Thanks for letting us know. We’re hoping lots people will tell us the stores they want to see! So that we can prioritize better. 🙂

  • mary salmon says:

I forgot to tell you…I left my heart in San Francisco…
    Love,
    Mary

  • Sarah W. says:

This is genius! Absolutely brilliant! I currently have a similar deal-hunting technique as you, involving lots of bookmarking items (or pinning items on Pinterest.com) and checking on them constantly, until they’re a price I want to pay or their is a good coupon/promotion at that particular store. Shelf is going to be so helpful for online shopping! I especially like the promo dashboard. I have a hard time keeping up with all the different store promotions and losing them in my email or having to reference my email constantly because I forget the codes. I also love the ability to compare items from different stores. No constructive criticism or suggestions yet, going to have to use it and play around with it more first 🙂 More stores would definitely be good but you already know that 🙂 I would love to see any of these stores added in the future: American Eagle Outfitters (my absolute fave!), Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie. Overall I really love this idea and think you’re really on to something here! (I have already gone and liked Shelf on Facebook, and will post the link to it on my Tumblr to tell my friends and family about it).

    • Lauren says:

Sarah, you must be the user we’ve built this for! Everything you said was exactly what we wanted users to feel when using this! And! You’re in luck, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, and The American Eagle Family were the next two sets of stores on our list. I kid you not!

Other people have been mentioning department stores too. This is going to be crucial we feel. But we haven’t found a good way to do it yet with our limited resources. (Hopefully we’ll be able to hire some people soon, and then we’ll be knocking them out one by one!)

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment!

  • Holy crappers you’re a genius. That is all.

(off to FB and Shelf now!)

  • Misty West says:

I liked Shelf on facebook and shared your link with all of my facebook friends. I wish you the best of luck on your new adventure! It is such a smart way to shop!

  • Karen says:

I like the look of your site and the layout. It appeared to be easy to use. While I myself am not an online clothes shopper, my college daughter is. She is very stylish, but wants a good deal on everything she buys. She will never pay full price for something! I will definitely be sharing your site with her and her friends. I think you have a great concept and maybe it will spread beyond clothing once it takes off and then I would definitely become a user.

  • Laura K says:

I am not much of a shopper but I have a cousin who is a bargain hunting phenom! I told her about it and I am sure she will sign up.

  • Leslie says:

    Hi!
I tried to sign up, but without Facebook, as I don’t do Facebook, there wasn’t a button to do so.
I think this is a great idea. Perfect for you and your partner, what a way to meld and build on your passions!
I would like to see more online quilting stores, dah!
But what about stores for older shoppers, like Christopher and Banks, Northern Reflections, Eddie Bauer, etc.
Thanks for the great giveaway and sponsorship of FatQuartershop too!
    Take care, Leslie

    • Lauren says:

Hey Leslie, I think maybe our sign-up box might have been confusing. Basically, you can login with Facebook if you want. But if you don’t want to, you can fill in the name and password fields in order to get in. (Facebook just launched a big new feature today, so we’ve noticed that it’s taking people a long time to get in using the Facebook button.) So in all seriousness, creating a new account is probably the way to go right now. 🙂

      Thanks!

  • Tami says:

What a fabulous idea and the “stores” I would love to see on there would be Dooney & Bourke (kind of totally addicted to their purses) and of course some fabulous quilt stores so I could know when Jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc are at their best price!! I wish you the best of luck with your new adventure.

  • Monica says:

I love the concept and the site tutorial was fabulous. But so far I’m having nothing but trouble using it. Shelf-It says I’m logged in but when I try to shelf an item on Old Navy, it says I’m not logged in. So I logged off and then back in. When I tried to shelf an item this time, I kept getting a select size message. But no matter how many times I added the size, I still couldn’t shelf it and kept getting the same message. Is it me? What am I doing wrong?

On a positive note, when all the bugs are worked out I’m sure smart and thrifty shoppers are going to love this tool. I agree that Anthropologie, and department stores like Macy’s and Nordstroms would be great additions.

    • Lauren says:

Thank you so much Monica, for trying trice! … And, even after it didn’t work, you still posted such a nice comment! We’re looking into this right now. There have been a few other people who had trouble Shelving items in the Gap family of stores. Try checking back later on sometime if you don’t mind! Hopefully this will get ironed out quickly! And thanks for the nice comment!

  • Pat S says:

Great idea and how exciting to take that step to move into a whole new life. Good luck.

  • Nicole J says:

Love the concept of your idea! I strictly use an iPad so I can’t wait til you get that figured out so I can start putting my christmas gift ideas together! Good luck and thanks for that chance to do some shopping! 🙂

  • Pam C says:

I love this concept. I tried to log in with FB and couldn’t get anywhere that way. I didn’t like that I couldn’t close out of the tutorial-had to go the whole way to the end. That may be an issue with Chrome. I don’t shop much anymore, but my kids shop for themselves and their kids. I would love to see some kids sites on here. I am definitely going to share with them. Best of luck with your venture.

    • Lauren says:

Thank you Pam, and that’s great feedback! We were wondering if that would be annoying to people. Our rationale was that we didn’t want people to accidentally close the tutorial, and then not know what to do. But we should definitely add a way for people to subtly skip this part if they’re already familiar with sites like Pinterest… and other bookmarking sites.

  • Carol Y says:

This will be very popular I predict, especially when you get more stores! I’d like to see Anthropologie, Fossil, J.Jill… If you want to get detailed results you can email me, but for now: When I signed up via Facebook, it took me to ‘page not found’ on your site (I just went to the home pg from there). Also I put an item from Hollister (that was in stock, chose a color and size), and now on Shelf instead of price below it, it says ‘stock’ with an X through it as if it was out of stock.

    • Lauren says:

Oh, I’m so glad that we did a test release with such nice people! Thanks for being patient with the bugs and letting us know about them! We’re going to email you about specifics. There have been a few other people with very similar comments, and for some reason, we’re unable to reproduce the result from our page. So I’ll have Atul (the developer and boyfriend) email you to get the links that you tried if you don’t mind!

Also, Anthropologie is the next store to be added, and we’ll make sure to move Fossil and J.Jill higher up on the list!

      Thanks!

  • Mimi says:

This is an awesome idea!! Wow! I live in a small remote community north of Lake Superior and as a family we don’t ‘get out’ frequently (especially in the 8 winter months!!!) so something like this would be perfect for use because we do shop online regularly.

    • Lauren says:

Fantastic Mimi! I don’t live anywhere remote, but I hate going to the mall. So I’m an online shopper all the way! Tell your other Lake Superior friends to try it too! 🙂

  • Shaun says:

What a great idea and time saver! I shared you on Facebook.

  • Melissa E White says:

SHELF sounds like a great tool and such a great adventure for you!! I will def sign up and see how this works! You go Spartanburg girl!!

    • Melissa E White says:

Lauren, I have tried to create an account on the opening page but it sends me to other vague sites unrelated. What could be wrong?

      • Lauren says:

That is very odd… Thank you for letting us know!

Are you clicking on the SignUp Button? And did you try to signup with Facebook or the username/password fields?

Also, do you know what site it sent you to? Because, if you click on the Facebook Signup button, a facebook popup will open that makes you sign in through Facebook first.

      • Lauren says:

Hey Melissa! Thanks for trying it out! Could you send me the link that it sent you to? This is a very odd problem. But you’re the second person who has mentioned it, so we’ll try to figure it out real quick and then post an update. 🙂 You’re Clemson Melissa right? 🙂

Are you signing up with the Facebook button, or by filling in the fields below. Does it take you to the other unrelated site immediately after you click submit?

        Thanks!

  • Mimi says:

I liked on FB!! Thanks! Haven’t tested Shelf yet and will keep checking for the addition of more stores. Thanks!

  • Erin says:

What a great idea! I look forward to using it.

  • Fran says:

This looks awesome! I am about to get back on it and start adding. 🙂 I love Ann Taylor, Gap, and Old Navy so I am happy. 🙂

  • Sandy N says:

I love the concept and can’t even imagine all the work that went into such a comprehensive shooping site. I’m excited to see new shops added. I signed up and picked a site to start shopping at but when I clicked on the Shelf It button it told me every time that I wasn’t logged in. Back to the tutorial, of which I had to click all the way through and still the same result. I couldn’t figure out where I was going wrong ( and trust me, I know it had to be my fault, lol) so I decided I will try it again later when I have more time.
Congratulations on such a smart idea and I wish you all the success in the world. I will definitely be going back to figure out where I was going wrong as it is definately a site I will use.

    • Lauren says:

No, it’s not you. I just tried Shelving something on Old Navy myself and had the same error! Crap! We’re fixing this right now. We would love it if you’d try back later! We’ll also add a way to bypass the tutorial!

  • kristy says:

My kids help me do everything on the computer……..I will tell them about SHELF. They have such busy lives and this could give them more time to call me and bring over the grandbabies. It is a win win situation! They love the stores you have already listed…so they will be thrilled.

  • Sally K says:

Congrats on the new venture! Great idea! I’m not the shopper that I used to be, one of my daughters has taken over that spot. I passed the info on to her and she is checking it out right now. She really likes it and has already passed info on to some of her sorority sisters. I will also be passing it on to my sisters. My shopping is more of the fabric type these days.

  • THIS. IS. GENIUS.

I will be telling all my friends about your site. I am so excited!!!!!!

  • Gloria Bruce says:

What a great concept and I will surely use your creation!! i will be telling the shoppers in my family. I have 5 daugter-in-laws and 1 daughter. See you on FB.

  • Shannon W. says:

I signed up to try it out! What a neat concept and idea! 🙂 Wishing you the best in your new adventure!

  • Jennie Bobbins says:

I signed up for it and I think it has a lot of nice aspects so far. Only problem for me is when it asks to choose stores, not a single one is some place I’d shop. So I stopped there. But still a great idea and I think this will catch on.

P.S. I liked Shelf on Facebook! Thanks for the chance!

  • MarciaW says:

Best wishes for success with your new venture, Shelf. I am on dial-up for the internet, DSL not available, and after 10 minutes gave up on waiting for a response and returned here to comment. I do think that yours is a reasonable idea, and being where you are in Calf. gives access to lots of additional talent going forward. Thanks for the chance to enter for a fqs gift cert too. I’m a quilter so this appeals to me.

  • Lisa says:

Well this just sounds like a great idea. Living in area with very little shopping choices, I do lots of my shopping online. The more store choices the better!

  • Wendy says:

Congrats on your new adventure! It sounds great for all those “Super Shoppers” but, I’m not much of a shopper and I’m not into all the computer technology. I will certainly tell all my shopping friends and relatives about it though. Thanks!

  • Patti says:

What a great web tool. I have told several of my friends who online shop to try it out. Good luck with your adventure.

  • Kate Brown says:

Wow, that is an amazing shopping tool! I wish you great success with it and have told several heavy duty shopper friends about it. Will also post it on my FB. Thak you so much for the awesome giveaway , LOL I wish us both luck!!!

  • Margaret Foster says:

Great plan! I wish you every success. Thanks for the give a way. Margaret

  • kay says:

BRILLIANT idea! None of the stores where I shop were supported yet, but I attempted to leave suggestions (J. Jill, Chico’s, Coldwater Creek). Had a couple of technical glitches: feedback blocked because it thought I wasn’t signed in (I had signed in twice), then didn’t recognize my user name after I had signed up (I think I’ve got this corrected now), and finally I couldn’t drag the “shelve-it” button on my Macbook.
For those of us in the medical or veterinary field, it would be great to have you support the companies where we get our scrubs. I suggested Lydia’s, Scrubs & Beyond, Uniform Advantage, and Uniform City.
Thanks again! I think this is going to be a great success!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Kay, thanks for your detailed response… this definitely helps!

Do you know what the problem was about signing in? Did you try the Facebook button? Or did you create an account with a username and password? Which way finally worked for you?

Also, which browser are you using?

  • Mary says:

I’m not much of a shopper but will pass on the info to my daughter-in-law 7 FB friends. Your new adventure sounded so familiar – my son just quit his job in Philly & camped his way across country to the Renegade Craft Show in San Francisco!! Here’s to new beginnings – good luck!!

  • Celine says:

Good luck! This sounds like a fantastic idea. I can’t wait for it to take off and be available all around the world… I’ll use it as soon as it hits the UK. Congratulations! And if you want to send the gift certificate for fabric my way, well I’ll gladly use it. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Inka says:

I live in Germany and so I only shop in this locations on vacation. I love the Fat Quarter Shop and I shop there. I would love to win the gift certificate because fabric is soo expensive in Germany.
    Greetings from Germany, Inka

  • loren says:

this is a really cool concept and seems user friendly. i love couponing so the page that lists all the deals is amazing, especially since i will not have to deal with emails and stuff from each site- i can just scan and see if an item is on sale or what-not. really cool and can’t wait to use it more!!

    • Lauren says:

Yay! I’m so glad you liked it Loren! We’re going to be beefing this page up quite a bit over the next week. We’re planning on adding most of the stores that people mentioned in the comments section before next week. So make sure to check back soon! And Like us on facebook if you want to keep up with the progress… and the list of stores that we’ve added.

  • Kathy says:

Great idea!! I’m emailing everyone I know that would like this and giving them your site link. I also “like”d you on FB. Good luck!!

  • Susan says:

Great idea! I hope you are successful with it. I’d love to win a Fat Quarter Shop shopping spree! Thanks for the chance!

  • Julianne says:

Love this idea of Shelf It. I do a lot of online shopping and I think this is a wonderful idea! A few stores I would like to see are Gymboree, Eddie Bauer, Williams Sonoma, and Lands End. Also, I would love to see you branch out into stores that sell books, music, and toys. I still have young children and shop diapers online too so I would use your site for that if it were available. I wish you a lot of success in this new venture! I buy a lot of department store makeup online and I try to keep track of who is having their bonus time like with Clinique and Estee Lauder so that might be another idea for you. An option to track who is doing free shipping would be nice, too. If you already have that option I missed it. I logged in with no problems and also liked it on Facebook without problems. GOOD LUCK! Excited to see this take off for you!!!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Julianne! Thanks for the feedback.

We do have the ability to see who is offering free shipping. If you go to our promo dashboard, you can filter the promotions by “Free Shipping Promos” up top. It’s a blue icon.

As far as the stores you asked about, we are planning on adding all of those, with the exception of Williams Sonoma (which will probably come a little later when we tackle the home goods area). That’s a GREAT idea about the department store makeup! We’ll remember this as soon as we start adding in department stores!

  • Bonny says:

I’ll have to try this! One more thing to get hooked on!!! ~*

  • Nancy says:

I signed up, but decided not to spend the time going through the tutorial–I do not shop for clothes online. Most of my online shopping is for things like toys for grandkids, electronics, books, etc. When you have a good selection of those types of stores, then I will take the time to try it out.

  • Linda says:

    LOVE YOUR IDEAS
    WILL TELL ALL MY FRIENDS!

  • Sheri says:

I can’t believe the sites and ideas that people keep coming up with. I wish you luck on your new venture!

  • Christine says:

What an absolutely brilliant idea!!! I am trying to save and this is ideal. I wish there was a version for us peeps in the UK. I hope your site is really successful and expands worlwide!

  • Barbara G says:

Hurry with the app for iPad, PLEASE! Great idea!

  • Marianne says:

This just sounds like a great idea. I do some of my shopping online, and a lot at Christmas. I have a 23 year old daughter and am going to get her involved!

  • Lisa in Texas says:

how super cool is that idea…i too love a great deal on quality merchandise and hate paying full price…nice! Lisa in Texs

  • LeAnn H. says:

Wow, this is a really intriguing idea! I am very impressed. I have gotten so frustrated with the full price/sale game that I almost don’t want to shop. Almost : )
Anyway, I will check out the new site for sure and will pass the word around.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Suzanne Williams says:

This is a great idea…LLBean would be a good place to have on your site also. I will tell you what I love…price tracking!!! I love when shopping for something…electronics, that I will know if it is at the high level or low. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, if when car shopping on line, that would be available?

  • Linda (manybooks) says:

Wow – that is an amazing tool! I don’t shop much for clothes online, but I buy for my daughter sometimes at Aeropostale or Gap or American Eagle. The tutorial was great (i’m a teacher and noticed a typo on the word “store” about half-way through.)
Best of luck, and I have it on my toolbar and on FB, so I will check it out more sometime! Thanks for the chance to win a GC to my FAVORITE online store 🙂

  • Carla J says:

What a great idea, and I will be sharing the link with the shoppers in my life. So hope you are ready for the Christmas rush.

  • Rosemary says:

Welcome to California and to the city in which I was born but now reside about 15 miles south, near the airport. I hope you new venture is a success. Being retired, I seldom buy anything more than food and fabric! Good luck in your new venture.

  • Terry Conner says:

Shelf looks very interesting. Great visual. Will check it out.

  • Vickie Alexander says:

Can’t wait to try it . I too am a coupon shopper. Can’t wait till u get itipad ready

  • Lynn M says:

I sent your link to my daughter, who is always looking for bargains. Good luck.

  • Corinne says:

Great idea and I love the interface! I think that having a site that looks good is just as essential as one that works well also. Good job, will definitely be sharing with fellow shopping/deal addicts 🙂

  • Carolyn B says:

I like your idea of finding the best price, just not sure how it works. Is there a fee to use your web?
    Thanks

  • Clara says:

I like the concept you have. It would be great for me because I am on a tight budget and have a very busy work schedule, so finding deals is important but very time consuming. Also, I live in a small town, so I end up ordering most clothing online. Unfortunately, I don’t have facebook (I know, I’m a rarity, but again, no time/trying to make the most of the time I have with the people around me), so I couldn’t give it a try. The tutorial makes the site seem user friendly. I hope you add an independent way to register, I’d love to give it a try. I’ll pass it along to my colleagues – all very busy people.

    • Lauren says:

Oh, we do have a way actually! It was right underneath the Facebook button. (There have been a bunch of people who have missed it though! So we’ll be making it more prominent.) Do try again if you can! You’re the perfect type of person to really get the most out of it!

  • natski says:

I just shared your website with my friends on facebook, goodluck with the new business, fingers crossed it’ll take off for you 🙂

  • Heidi says:

Shelf looks great! Can’t wait to try it out somemore.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Allie H says:

Absolutely LOVE this idea. I found out about it through Portfolio Center on FB. I’ll be attending there starting October and I’m stoked to see what their brilliant students create post PC! Shared it on my FB and liked the page! I’d love to see Urban Outfitters and Anthro on there.

    • Lauren says:

Oh, that’s awesome! I loved LOVED the portfolio center. I can’t speak highly enough of it!

And thanks for checking out the site! Anthropologie is my favorite store out there… and so I’m surprised that we haven’t added it yet.

By the way, enjoy PC! It’s an experience like nothing else. And you definitely get out of it, what you put in it. Even the classes that seemed sort of random, wound up helping me out in some way or another. And take bookbinding with Ann! That’s one of those classes that doesn’t sound useful, but after that class, I’ve found that I can literally build ANYTHING! You’ll be surprised. Very very many people have been impressed with my mad bookbinding skills. Ha! I actually think that’s why I was picked up as a fabric designer for Moda. They said that my submission packet was like nothing they’d ever seen. 🙂 Also, make sure to bug Hank about getting into his chair class!

Thanks for stopping by, and try to pass the url along if you can!

      • Allie H says:

Thank you! I am sure I will enjoy it just as much as you did! I absolutely fell in love with it after touring and seeing what it’s like. Haha! I didn’t even know they had a bookbinding class! I’ll definitely be looking into that 🙂 Thanks for all the suggestions! I’ll be sure to pass along the message to Hank! Ha.

One more thing- I’m trying to sign into my Shelf account and it isn’t working for some reason. I type in my email & PW and it just refreshes back to the main page :/

        • Lauren says:

Hey Allie, we’re actually working on this right now. There were multiple problems that happened all at once that led to this bug. One of our developers disabled our form validation. So you received no notices of errors. Plus, if you tried to fill out the “Forgot password form”… that was also messed up for a bit. Those first two things are fixed-ish now. But we’re still trying to figure out what made it so that you couldn’t get in in the first place. We do have your account listed. You were number 126. 🙂 But I’ll let you know as soon as it gets worked out! And thanks for trying it! If you wouldn’t mind trying once more when we resolve this… that would be really helpful!

          • Lauren says:

Hey Allie, I’m not totally sure if my blog sends out an email, letting you know there’s a new message here, so if you don’t get this, no problem… But if you do, would you mind trying again? If you still can’t get in, would you mind just clicking on the “forgot your password” link and replacing it. Then seeing if you can get in. You were actually the only person who commented on this problem. So we want to make sure that this isn’t a bug that we need to fix (that maybe other people just didn’t mention). Now that we know you’re the one with the issue, we can watch our logs to see what the error is (if this happens to you again). (And, my WordPress editing abilities only go so far… and I’m pretty sure, you won’t be able to comment back because threaded comments only goes in 5 times. So if you get this, just let me know what happens by email. laurenjung1 (at) gmail (dot) com.)

            Thanks again for the feedback!

  • Chris says:

Wow….what an amazing idea. We can all say we knew you when! Seriously, I will spread the word about Shelf. Thank you for letting me sign up for your giveaway.

  • Loris Mills says:

Ingenious idea! I am a shopper at LLBean, Crabtree Evelyn and quilt shops 🙂
I will try out the beta shop. Best of luck in your endeavor!

  • Mary Evans says:

    Great concept!

It would be good to add some stores that sell updated clothing for the larger figure! Perhaps Lane Bryant or something like that!

    I hope I win a prize!

  • Margaret says:

This is an awesome idea! I will definitely try it out. And welcome to the Bay Area!

  • Janet says:

I’m retired and not a big shopper; however, Shelf sounds like a great idea instead of going through all the steps you originally went through. What a pain and headache trying to keep track and now how smart of you to develop this program that does the work for you. I’ll be glad to share Shelf with others I know and good luck and much success in your new endeavor. Thanks for sponsoring the great giveaway!

  • Barbara Genett says:

I’m also a bargain shopper and wait for the sales before purchasing. This looks very interesting. Enjoyed your journey

  • Shelf sounds like a great idea for serious shoppers. I’m not but my daughter and her friends are and several of my friends. If they used this service it would save them time and could more shopping. (-;
isn’t that what it’s all about!!
Thanks for the chance to enter even if I’m not a shopper but Ill spread the work and like you on Facebook
    Anne
    kittymom7@aol.com

    • Lauren says:

Thank you Anne, that would be great! Tell anyone you know that likes shopping! It will definitely save them time AND money! And at the very least, they should check it out for the promo dashboard. This will allow people to unsubscribe from the millions of retail emails that come every morning!

  • Loris Mills says:

I checked out the beta site but will need to work at it a little more. Got confused with how to put something on the Shelf :-/ but sure it will work eventually. I think I usually shop for items rather than at specific stores online and ususally not at the ones so far on your site. I go to Zappos sometimes though….and if I’m not shopping for a specific item I saw someplace else..I get totally overwhelmed with 9 million choices. Best of luck with your new website. Thanks for the invite to try it out.

  • Julie in WA says:

Good luck on your new adventure! Not that I understand what it is—some kind of internet shopper helper. I am totally clueless, as I visit quilt blogs and that it about all! But I do wish you success!

  • sndy1 says:

Sounds like a great idea. Good luck on your new venture and thanks for the giveaway.

  • Karen says:

Wow! That is a fantastic idea! I will tell all my shopping buddies about this – I don’t have time to peruse it now but will do so in the future. I love innovation! Thanks!

  • Rachel Booth says:

What an AWESOME idea !!! I love love LOVE it! I immediately popped over to try it… The tutorial is great, very easy to understand, and shelving items was really easy. I especially liked the dashboard with promotions. I wish y’all had Anthropologie but otherwise I love it!

  • Sharon says:

What an awesome idea!! Good for you guys – I really hope it’s as successful as Facebook/Google etc. I have an iPad so can’t check it out yet, but I’d like to see Crate and Barrel on there please. Thanks for the chance to win 🙂

  • Janine Huisjen says:

I’m not much of an online shopper, but my daughter is a super bargain sniffer. I’ll let her know about this.

  • Caroline says:

Great idea! Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Caroline says:

Great idea! Thanks for the chance to win. Love your fabric.

  • Brenda C. says:

Wow – congratulations on taking the initiative to start Shelf. I can’t wait to refer a friend to the site to check out.

  • El says:

Great idea! Will love to see it grow – I love watching ModCloth and Anthropologie. . .

    • Lauren says:

Sweet those two are coming up! We’ll keep our FB page updated with the new stores that we add. One of our team members is in charge of adding stores, and he has been doing 2-3 per week. Next week is Anthropologie!

  • Jackie says:

What a great idea! Hope you will get it on the ipad soon! I told 3 persons already and I know they will tell their friends also. Good luck! Please add my name for the great giveaway!

  • CaraQuilts says:

I freakin LOVE that idea!! I’m an uber bargain shopper too, a very similar routine to yours so I am signed up and will be loving it!!
My husband will not thank you but I will!! Genius fabric designer and shopper with the computer hubby. You have it all right girl!!

    • Lauren says:

That’s funny about your husband! I’ve been having an EXTREMELY difficult time NOT shopping while working on this project. We’re on a turbo-budget right now because of the whole no-salary thing… Ha! But I’ve been bookmarking the hell out of stuff that I want to buy later!

  • Haley says:

Oh. Wow. That is the bestest, most brilliantest idea. Ever. And it looks so pretty. I like spiffy looking websites. I would like to see Anthropologie, Victoria Secret, Macy’s, Belk, Dillards, Coldwater Creek, H&M, Clarks. Let’s see, other ideas… Personally, I’d like to see it expanded beyond clothes (though I know that might not be in the cards right now), because I do this same shopping comparison when I buy home goods, etc.

    • Lauren says:

Awesome! I’m so glad you mention Anthropologie. This is my “go-to” store whenever I want to spend money. And they have truly beautiful sales! We will be adding this store next! We’ll be updating our Facebook page as soon as it goes up. Victoria’s Secret and Coldwater Creek will also be added in the next week or two. The department stores will be a little while later, because those are huge. But they’re also in demand, so stay tuned!

  • Lois says:

Like the concept. I have a hard time finding age-appropriate clothing for the petite 50-something woman. I like Christopher and Banks. My husband and I are also avid bicylers and would love to be able to watch prices on your site for Specialized, Pearl Izumi, Sugoi, Louis Garneau, and Castelli bicycle clothing. Hope you can help us out. Thanks for the chance to win the fabric.

  • Tracey S. says:

O.k. I am the queen of good deals and this is the best idea I’ve ever heard of. Especially in this economy! Kudos to you and your hubby! I hope the sky is the limit for you guys. I can’t wait to hop on and check it out.

    • Lauren says:

Thank you so much Tracey! We love hearing comments like that! I’m obsessed with deals. 🙂 And its so much fun being able to put all of these shopping skills towards such a fun cause!

  • Diane says:

Great Idea! I have sent it on to my quilting buddies, who are much better
online buyers than I. Good luck to you both – it is brilliant!

  • Diane Steele says:

I live in northern CA but grew up in the SF Bay Area. You’ll LOVE it there! Shelf is a great idea (and a perfect name!) I love Coldwater Creek and Nordstrum so I’ll look for those to be added to your site. Hope you have great luck with it!

    • Lauren says:

Thank you so much! We’ll definitely be adding Coldwater Creek. A lot of people have been asking for that!

And we LOVE San Francisco. Today, we took a break and walked up to Lombard Street (the curvy part) for the first time. It was awesome!

  • Pam Gardner says:

I’m going to try to like you on facebook. I am 62 and hate dressing like an old lady but I am a size 12 and it’s really hard to find good stuff. I like J.Jill which is all I can think of at the moment.

    • Lauren says:

That’s great! We’ve had people request that… as well as Coldwater Creek and Chicos, so I’m thinking they’re all probably in a similar category. We will get on this.

My mom gets like a billion emails from J. Jill and Coldwater Creek everyday, and though she thinks the Shelves might be a little over her head, she said she’ll definitely be using the promo dashboard. Because that will allow you to unsubscribe from all those daily emails. We’ll surface all of the sales in one place. And they’ll be color-coded! Which is always fun!

  • kathy says:

I’m not a huge online shopper but always love a deal. I will check it out further. I did mention this to my 2 adult daughters and they were all over it. Would like to see Dillards, Macy and Coldwater Creek.
Thanks for a chance to win giveaway.

  • Nicole Sender says:

Liked Shelf on fb: Nicole Sender. I was #55. Hope you keep getting people to visit your wall.

  • Anita says:

Hi Lauren. This is a very cool idea. I am guessing it is just for stores in the United States at this time? I am in Canada and work in retail (Pier 1 Imports) and I am always watching for things to go down in my own store. 🙂 If this is available to Canadians I will put it on Facebook to my friends. Thanks!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Anita, That’s so cool that we’ve been noticed outside of the US! To be honest, we haven’t really thought about it yet. That will definitely be in the plans if we’re able to get big. So lets keep our fingers crossed!

  • Alice says:

The demo was good, but why do you have to sign up through FaceBook? The site looks very user friendly. What about more shoes… Zappos? Lingerie would be a nice addition as well. Good luck!

    • Lauren says:

Hey Alice, You have been one of many people to ask about this. 🙂 Sorry! We actually DO allow you to sign in without Facebook. If you check out the sign up box, there’s a Facebook login button… and beneath that is a way for you to create an account on Shelf. We will most definitely be updating the layout so that this is more obvious. 🙂 Thanks though for mentioning. All of this feedback has been so helpful!

  • Sherry Keith says:

I loved your idea of Shelf.. My daughter is the real shopper.. she just moved to Denver in May.
I will turn her on to the idea… I know she will love it and try it and join… I bet.
I will also give the info to my grand daughter. Love your story!
best of Luck in San Francisco!
    Thanks for the pattern…
    Sherry

  • June says:

Terrific idea! I saw an earlier post for Chicos and Coldwater Creek. Would Zappos work for shoes? How about Athleta? Thanks for lettings us try it out and for the opportunity for the gift certificates!

  • Rae says:

What a great idea!! I don’t do a lot of online shopping, but I will be telling my sister-in-law about it because she loves a great deal also. She would definitely want to see Gymboree added to your list. Thanks for the giveaway, and good luck with your new business!

  • Peggy says:

I love when people make their dreams come true. Congratulations!

  • El says:

I don’t know that I’ll look into Shelf but I’m certainly going to point my friend in its direction.

  • Wanda says:

I love Shelf IT. I have been adding things from Athleta that I have my eye on.

Stores to add include: Isis, Title Nine, and Victoria Secret are others I love to shop.

  • Estelle says:

Sweet I am totally looking up shelf! I do the same thing about deal shopping… and it is a HUGE pain, but worth the savings in the end.

  • Lisa B in AK says:

I like this idea and am going to send this page to my daughter and a few friends. I don’t facebook.

    • Lisa B in AK says:

Oh, and why did you move to SF to do this? Or did you say and I read to fast…

      • Lauren says:

No, we didn’t say. Ha! It just felt like the thing to do! 🙂 Silicon Valley and what not… Plus, we were living in The-Middle-Of-Nowhere New Jersey before this… and it was stifling our creativity. Or so we thought. 🙂

  • Nati says:

Love the idea! so signed up and tried it. I am actually looking for some fabric for my new headboard and thought that shelf would be great to have them all in one place (currently I was thinking of using pinterest to have all the fabric in a board but I don’t like that everyone will see it). But there was no category for fabric so could not add it to my shelf 🙁 It would be great if we could create our own categories.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Nati, you’re in luck!!! We allow you to create your own shelves. When you go to your home screen, look on top right corner, there is a green button “+New Shelf”. Press it and you can enter your own personal shelf. And after that, when you shelf a new item, you can select the newly created shelf for which to put the item on.

Let us know if this is what you were looking for. Thank you so much for trying out 🙂

Also, I felt the same about Pinterest. Actually, we’ve a brilliant solution 🙂 We are implementing a new feature that will allow you to import all of your pin boards to Shelf. So you will get the privacy and also all other features of Shelf. Would you like that??

  • Nati says:

I posted on facebook about shelf, not just for the give away but loving this idea! it is brilliant!

  • Deborah says:

Just wondering if you’ll be doing a fabric version of this? Where quilters and crafters can compare prices and search for fabrics online worldwide.

  • SuzK says:

This is a brilliant idea – I’m not a shopper (I’m a large woman, so stores are limited for me). However, I have a couple of friends who are going to love this site!

  • Christine says:

    What a great idea!

  • Shawn says:

I’ve done your best to help out the shoppers of the world.

  • Hi Lauren — I am not a shopper, but my daughter is! She earned a degree in apparel studies and is an assistant buyer of fine jewelry at a major Arkansas retailer. I sent her a link to your post. By the way, my favorite soap opera, “The Young and the Restless,” is featuring a storyline about two young couples who are launching a site similar to Shelf. They call it “TagNGrab.” Life imitating art, and the other way around! I did like Shelf on FB, and I wish you the best of luck with your new venture!

  • Katrina says:

What a great idea! I know a few people who also love a good bargain and will be interested in checking it out.
Thank you for the chance to win.

  • Rebecca says:

Great idea. I’m working on telling my friends to see what they think. Know several that will love it.

  • Linda W says:

Fabulous concept! I’ve always been a bargain shopper. I’m working on Weight Watchers and have gone down 3 dress sizes. A new wardrobe is super expensive, so this would be a wonderful help. Best wishes with it and hopefully you’ll add fabric shops in the future!!

  • trillium says:

I signed up, and also LIKED it on FB.

Can you add stores for tweens & teens, like American Eagle, Justice, Hollister???

  • Lacey S. says:

Wow–what a clever idea you guys have come up with!! Definately something I’ll have to check out and tell my friends about 🙂

  • Cindi P says:

I only have access to my IPAD right now but will definitely share with my friends and family! I wish you the best!

  • Bree says:

I’m probably the only girl on the planet who doesn’t really do online shopping, but I have some online-shopping addict friends and totally shared the site with them!

  • Karen E says:

Good Heavens!! This is genius!! This is how all great ideas start! Congratulations.

  • Syd says:

I hate to shop! I find it tedious, so I can’t wait to check this out!! I did tell my daughter and am sure Shelf will be right up her alley! Good luck with this new adventure!!

  • Donna W says:

Great idea. Looks like this would be a good way to shop. Maybe Coldwater Creek could be added? Found out about this website while reading your blog for the Moda Shop hop and will be letting my “quilting” friends know about this. Thanks for the chance to win a great prize

  • Heather Lee says:

LOVE THIS IDEA! Can’t wait to use it. I love Target and Kohls and of course Amazon (those are my primary online shopping outlets) though have been know to use others. How about store in the crafty sector? Like Joann’s, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. Or fabric stores for us quilters :-)!

  • Jennifer says:

I’m not a shopper but will pass this on to my sister who LOVES to shop

  • Kathy H says:

Great idea!! Your step by step process is very familiar to me; I do the same thing!

  • Melanee says:

emailed several friends about this — neat idea!! I hope it is a success for you both (who doesn’t like a great deal)

  • Carolyn Howland says:

I liked Shelf on Facebook and emailed my shopping friends about your wonderful nee adventure.

  • Jeanne says:

This seems like a good idea. As a mom, I’d love to see some toy stores (toys r us, lego.com). This could be extremely helpful come Christmas. Perhaps you’re looking to only capture the clothing market. I can understand that too. I look forward to spending more time on the site and seeing what kind of deals I can find.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Jeanne, that’s a very good point. Many people have asked us to add children’s clothing stores like Gymboree… Which is now on our list. When we get this off the ground, we definitely want to expand into other areas… In the mean time, you can certainly bookmark items from any store. So at the very least you can keep track of all the stuff you want to buy. You can create you’re own Shelves too… so if you want to make a Christmas shopping shelf, that’s no problem. I didn’t actually put this in the video, but maybe I should update it. 🙂 The button is up on the upper right hand corner of the screen. This will allow you to create your own Shelf… and then move other items into it.

  • Abby says:

I’ve signed up – this is a really fantastic idea! I’d love to see some shoe specific sites like Zappos or Shoes.com added

  • Carmen Wyant says:

I’m going to go sign up, but wanted to say I think this is a great idea. Some stores you might think of adding: J Jill, Blue Fish, LL Bean, Sahalie, Coldwater Creek.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Carmen, Coldwater Creek and J. Jill have been requested a lot! So these are definitely high up on the list! So is LL Bean. The other two I actually haven’t heard of! Ha! But I’ll add those to my list. We’ll make sure to post an update on our Facebook Fan page as soon as we have added a store, so you can check back there for updates!

  • Kathie Hull says:

Great idea! Posted to my facebook for you. Thank you for the chance to win your giveaway!

  • debra says:

what a great idea i know for one i try to compare shop and a waste of time energy and money trying to find best deal. what a great concept will show all my friends did sign up cant wait to get home and start shopping thanks for the great giveaways good luck with your new venture

  • gemma gatti says:

    Your idea is genius!
From your OCD chair to this….makes total sense!!!
I will definitely use it. PC is proud!

    • Lauren says:

Thank you Gemma! That means a lot, I’ll make sure to keep you guys posted!

PC was the best decision I ever made, and I make sure to sing its praises whenever I get the chance!

  • Cindi C says:

Interesting idea! Good Luck with it. PS can’t wait to see some quilt shops on it.

  • Sherri says:

Great idea! My kids would love this as their wallets are never as big as their closet! Their favorite stores are American Eagle, Hollister, DSW (don’t forget shoes!). The sky is the limit… after you get clothing and jewlery – think about bedding and home goods! Good luck!

    • Lauren says:

Great advice!!! I TOTALLY forgot about DSW, I’m so glad you mentioned that! We already support Hollister. And this week or next we’ll be adding American Eagle! Home goods have been very much requested, so that’s on the list as well! Thanks for stopping by!

  • katie says:

    What a great website!

  • Rachel says:

What a great idea! I’d love you see you add Lands End, Target, Cold water Creek, J Jill, Zappos, Aldo, and Eddie Bauer. How neat to have the shelf track different prices for you ! Such a time saver.

  • Bridgidk says:

OMG!!! What a GREAT idea!!! Why didn’t I think of that??? I am going to tell my girls about your site. They are internet shopping maniacs. This is perfect for them. Thank You!!!

  • annelies says:

Ok…now you are talking!!!! Great plan. Could you add some kids things too…being the over the top Oma, I love Baby Gap and Old Navy.

Now for ME, have you checked out Ruche….love this shop. Take a peek. XXX

    • Lauren says:

Great feedback Annelies, we’re definitely going to be adding in Kid stores soon. Lots of people have requested that. If you like us on facebook, we’ll be able to update you whenever we add new stores!

Oh, and checked out Ruche! Super SUPER COOL! I love finding new stores!

  • Beth B. says:

Okay I guess my first request would be for all of the tutorial stuff to be free (an upfront if you will). I hate sites that I read about online or in magazines, that I can’t check out without signing up…I don’t yet know if I want to sign up. So for the curious, having that info upfront before they sign up would be really helpful.

I don’t know if you can do department stores, but I find, for things like make-up or other beauty products, I check out the main product page, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, etc. for prices.

This might sound like a no duh…but what about a fabric option? Housewares? Things like le Cruset’s are always going on sale in specific/seasonal colors and it would be great to get this info.

    • Lauren says:

All great feedback Beth, thank you!

For the info upfront, you’re right. We actually have a little demo but it’s hidden at the moment. If you click on the DEMO button on the homepage there’s a video that walks you through the whole thing. Is that the sort of thing that you would want? It’s difficult to allow you to actually try it out, because if you don’t have an account on Shelf… there’s no way for us to remember you… next time you come. So you might Shelve some items, and then next time, when you return, they won’t be there anymore.

We do want to add in the department stores. Tons of people have requested this. 🙂

And housewares will come a little later.

      Thanks for the great feedback!

  • Lori says:

Fabulous idea now I can have my girls do there own on line shopping and watch the prices too.

  • Hueisei says:

Great idea! I love to purchase on Groupon.com too. But, I’m from Malaysia and some of the shops I can’t find it here. Well, congrats on a great adventure of life. I wish I can quilt my daily job to venture into some business some day.

  • kathi schaffer says:

not much of an online shopper but could be a generational thing. told my daughter about “Shelf” and shevthinks it’s a greatbidea and plans to visit.

  • Wendy says:

What a great idea, we need something like this in Australia.

  • Carla G says:

What a great idea! Wonder if you could add Canadian stores? Like the Old Navy.ca version. And would like to see more kids stores like Children’s Place, Gymboree, and Osh Kosh B’Gosh. 🙂

    • Lauren says:

Great suggestions, we’ll definitely be adding Children’s stores soon. A number of people have been asking us for that! Canadian stores will probably come a bit later though.

  • Nuning K. Himawati says:

First thing : I must calculated the tax (in my states) before I do shopping…….
    It’s different online shop…GOOD LUCK

  • Katie Y. says:

I think that this is such an AMAZING idea! I am one of those shoppers who never ever pays full price. I just can’t make myself do it! I looked at your site, and I think that it’s already pretty great. Would you ever consider putting stores other than clothing/shoe stores (such as Bed Bath and Beyond or toy stores)? I will definitely be putting your new site to great use 🙂

    • Lauren says:

Thank you Katie!! You’re just like me then. I NEVER buy stuff at full price. I don’t enjoy it nearly as much as when I get something on sale. When it’s on sale, I feel like I’ve won some sort of prize!

We will be expanding into home goods. Toy stores will probably come a bit later.

  • Michelle says:

I really liked Shelf. Not sure if I should tell my 18 year old about it!

  • Karen L says:

It’s an awesome idea. Honestly, I do buy online, but am trying to restrain myself in the clothing area because I still have 2 sizes to go and I don’t want to sink too much money into what I’m wearing now. Sad isn’t it? Plus…fabric. I think, I need a new (name a clothing item, most recently bra); I think I’ll buy one when I get paid. But then…fabric. And, then I forget about it ’til I realize once again that I need a new (name a clothing item, again…bra).

Nonetheless, I’ll like you on facebook and share the site there.

The post can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/savingrc

    I wish you much success!

    • Lauren says:

Hah! I do that a lot too Karen. I go shopping all the time. But then wind up forgetting about stuff. That’s why I began bookmarking. I have a “When I get paid” bookmark folder that has a huge collection of items that I’ve wanted more than anything… at some point or another. 🙂

  • Kathleen says:

SHELF is an amazing idea! I have many bargain hunting friends who will LOVE this. I can always use some new fabric, so thanks for the chance to win a gift certificate.

  • Kris S. says:

I will definitely pass the word along to others I know who shop online.

  • pbach1 says:

wonderful idea — about time, i might add!

  • Lauren aka Giddy99 says:

I posted on my Facebook (giddy_embroiders), and I’m intrigued, but I don’t buy clothing or accessories all that often. If you expand to the FABRIC SHOPS someday, well, then… ! 🙂 GOOD LUCK in your venture – it IS an awesome idea!

  • Shelf is amazing! Can’t wait to use it for my Christmas shopping. I will definitely tell my friends about it!

  • Joann says:

This is amazing! I just spent last week with my daughter shopping and shopping…she has been posted to Pakistan for the next 2 yrs (govt) and I just don’t know what she is going to do! I am sure there are some great things to find in the city she is going to, but considering the volatility of the area she might not get let out of the compound she will be living in to explore. Shelf will be a welcome asset for her!

  • Pat C says:

Thanks for the info – most of those stores are out of my size and price range but I’ll pass along the info!

  • Judy in Michigan says:

How cool is this!! I will sign up and get my daughters and granddaughters to sign up too. Thanks for the great idea and the chance to win a great prize.

  • Alyce says:

Congratulations!! What an AMAZING idea!! I unfortunately am not in America, and the shipping overseas is too crazy, but I have shared it on my personal Facebook page for my many US-based friends!! Good luck!!

  • Nicole says:

This is a cool idea! You have my favorites, Gap, J.Crew, Banana Republic. Would definitely love to see some kid clothing stores too.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Nicole, thanks for trying it out! We are adding kids stuff very soon. If you check up on our FB fan page, we’ll make sure to post updates whenever a new store gets added. 🙂 And a bunch of people requested kid stores!

  • Nancy says:

I love this concept. I’ve spent some time messing around in it and it made me really excited! It’s like pinterest only for shopping and with more cadgets. The two things that I noticed was that I tried to list something but it never showed up in my Shelf. I tired a couple times- so I”m not sure what that was about. Also I put something there that was already on sale, but on my Shelf it just shows it at the original listing price. Stores that I would love to see on there are Target (yikes that might be hard with so much inventory!) and Shabby Apple! Thanks for sharing this fun new vernture with us.

    • Lauren says:

Hey Nancy, right as you sent this, we were looking at our logs and noticed that a shelving was failing. Were you doing it from Athleta? We added full support for this store at the last minute, and so I’m afraid its a tiny bit buggy yet. 🙂 Sorry! We’re actually fixing the problem right now. As for the sale price. Did it show you the wrong price when it was on your Shelf? Or was it in the side-bar popup that showed up when you were shelving it? The popup shows the original price. Then we apply the promotions to the item once its Shelved on our site. (This is probably a little confusing, so either way, we’re needing to change that.) Thanks so much for trying it out, and please keep using it! It’s only going to get better!

  • Heather G says:

What an awesome idea…why didn’t I think of that 🙂 can’t wait to play around on the shelf site. I liked you on fb too. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • Jenniffier says:

What a fun site. Thanks for sharing. I like how you can track things. One thing I would like to see is a link back to shelf up at the top when I navigate to a shop. I found it difficult to find my way back to the website. Also, I would love to see places like pottery barn, william sonoma, crate and barrel. I am not a huge clothes shopper, but home items and cooking those are more for me.

  • Deborah K. says:

I LOVE this idea because I do consider myself a savvy shopper. I had trouble with IE and the Facebook login. When I went to Old Navy and tried to shelf something, I got an error message (some black type overlaid on the site which seemed to be telling me I wasn’t logged in) I created another non Facebook login using a different e-mail address and it still wouldn’t let me Shelf It. I then tried Google Chrome with the non Facebook login and it worked fine. Now that the item is shelved, I can see it with both Google Chrome and IE, but they appear different depending on what browser I am using. It is a closeup, non full view in IE, while it is a full view (preferred) in Chrome. I will play with it some more and give some more feedback because I am excited. I would love to see Macy’s, Kohl’s and 6PM.com on there. Thanks!

  • Rhianne says:

Oh how cool! I can’t wait to try this out and hopefully get some great deals this holiday season. I’m sure it’s been lots of hard work and I wish you the best of luck as you move forward.

  • Sandy N says:

Had trouble the first time I tried it the other day with Old Navy. It said I wasn’t signed in every time I tried to shelf something. Tried it again today and am having the same trouble. I tried it with The Loft and signed in 2 or 3 times. I even tried changing my password and no go. I will keep trying as I think it’s a wonderful idea. I hope you get the kinks worked out.

  • Ashley G says:

What a wonderful idea! I am a huge shopper especially online- I use my iPad for everything because I have 3 small kids and they never stay put, so Im grabbing and going everywhere I go. I know you said you are making shelf compatible with iPad but I think that would make it even easier to use!

  • Ashley G says:

I liked y’all on FB- and will share your great idea with all my other mommies that can’t always drag the kiddos to the store but love a great deal!

  • Carmen says:

What a great concept! I too would like to vote for adding kid’s stores, places like Target and craft supply stores (if possible).

  • Kelsey says:

THIS IS AWESOME!! I too am an obsessive bargain hunter and I actually just bought some sweaters today for full price at Old Navy and was feeling so guilty about it and then the cashier gave me a coupon for $30 OFF!!! Best ever!! I’d like to see The Limited and Lululemon on there too 🙂

  • Kacy Burchfield says:

What a great idea!! I really like the layout and the feel of it. I’ll be sharing this with my friends!

  • Kathleen says:

Wow, you’re so brave to quit your job, pack everything up and move the way you did. How scary and yet so adventurous at the same time. Best of luck and I hope you have a blast.

  • Joy says:

I’ve already told my husband about this site. He does all his gift shopping for me online so this will be great for him! If you’re going to be adding home goods, I’d like to see Target, Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn on the list. If you’re just sticking with clothes, I’d like to see Macy’s and Nordstrom. Any chance you’ll be adding online quilt shops??

I’m having trouble with the Compare feature. Some examples: some items in the queue don’t have a corresponding colored line showing up on the graph; sometimes the graph data appears to be incorrect (ie, at one point listing the pants I was comparing as $6.5 k). I’m using the Chrome browser, so maybe that’s the problem? Anyway, I’m sure you’ll figure these kinks out soon enough. I really like this idea and am excited to see how it goes!

  • Jeanne says:

Wow, I’m impressed all your bravery. Nothing like an adventure to make you refocus on the important things in life like shopping and helping others shop. Thanks and I can’t wait to try out “Shelf”!

  • Pam says:

Not sure how to actually sign up for the drawing…trying not to spend $$ with three kids in college. And the kids say that “Mom on Facebook is creepy” so I don’t do that. Probably not enough time to do that. So hope this gives me a chance to win since I am not technologically minded with Facebook, Twitter, etc.

  • Melanie C says:

Love the idea!!! I’m just bummed I’m a shopping budget right now so I can’t try it out too much right now.

  • Jan says:

I have done my best to help the world with shoppiing.
    Thanks Jan

  • Missie says:

Great idea! I will pass this blog over to my shopping daughters who will love this! Thanks so much for sharing and Best of Luck with it!

  • Cindy Smith says:

Great idea! When I dragged the Shelf it, I only got the Shelf.inc so I’ll work on that more.

I would like to see Macy’s, Norstrams and Dillards.

  • Amanda says:

This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I’m a bargain shopper myself so when I have time I will certainly check it out a little closer. Good luck in your new adventure!
    Amanda

  • Leslie says:

this is a great concept! I will be sharing it with all my daughters, who all love hunting for a bargain. Best of luck with this new chapter in your life! I’m thinking about what I would like to add. I’ll be back to let you know.

  • Susan K says:

Good luck with your new endeavor. It’s a great idea – I love a good bargain!

  • N ancy Stone says:

I am passing this info on to my daughters, as it sounds just perfect for the. I would like to see Target and Pottery Barn .

  • Helen says:

I would be interested to know if this is available for overseas buyers.

  • Angie Spendlove says:

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE IDEA! I’m hooked and I haven’t even tried it! I will be spreading the word – I don’t like shopping so HUGE thanks for doing it for me! Can’t wait to purchase some great deals 🙂
