Today is our stop on the blog hop, yay!! This entry is for three fabric giveaways from our new line, Birds and Berries (see above). We’ll be accepting comments through the 14th, and we’ll announce the winner on the 15th! So stay tuned!
(Usually, on our blog hop posts… all three of us participate, but it just so happens that my sister, Carrie, is in Spain right now (jealous)… and my mom is frantically trying to put together the patterns that we need to turn in for our book that’s coming out sometime next year. 🙂 ) Anyway, it’s just going to be me today…
And so without further ado, I’m now going to talk about my hometown of Spartanburg SC. That I fondly refer to as “The Burg”.
1. My absolute favorite restaurant in the whole world is Wade’s Southern Cooking
It’s a “meat and three” restaurant that has been around since 1947. EVERY SINGLE TIME that I go out to eat there, I order 2 fried chicken legs, 2 orders of macaroni & cheese, and 1 order of string beans with a sweet tea and corn bread.
No matter what time of day that you go, there is a line that goes out the door because its awesome!
Now that I’ve moved away, I only get to eat there maybe once every six months or so which is sad… so my mom usually buys me a t-shirt to get me through the months that I’m away. 🙂 See above.
Anyway, Wade’s has these really funny billboards that are all over town… all of which, focus on their tagline, “Have you eaten your veggies?” They crack me up.
2. Andie MacDowell is from Gaffney South Carolina.
Gaffney is spitting-distance away from Spartanburg, so I’m going to lump her into this blog entry… because Spartanburg doesn’t have much else. 🙂
3. And now… a funny story about my family (more specifically my dad), who was famous here in Spartanburg for about a week after he was ARRESTED.
So it all started with a neighbor who lived up the road from us (hmmm, let’s call him Mr. Cailey). Well Mr. Cailey was annoyed by the fact that the traffic passing in front of his house, didn’t abide by the stop sign at the end of the road. Well… eventually, this was just too much for him to bear, so one morning… after everyone left for school and work… bulldozers and dump trucks arrived to close the road off at the stop sign. Thus dividing the neighborhood into two parts.
When residents returned home that evening and drove down this road (same as always)… they hit a dead end… complete with newly planted grass, shrubbery, and a split rail fence.
Everyone was up in arms about it. School buses had to be rerouted. Fender benders occurred when residents realized (a little too late) that their street was missing. Meetings were held. Petitions signed… Etc. This is a picture of where the street dead-ends. The previously connected road is sitting just beyond the trees.
Well, my dad had a walking route on our street that he took every night. And, street or no street, he REFUSED to be rerouted. He went on his merry way… and when he’d come to this newly landscaped yard (that used to be the street), he walked right across it and continued on to the other half of the neighborhood.
One night Mr. Cailey had the nerve to accuse him of trespassing. To which my dad responded, “Sue me”. (My dad lives by no one’s rules. And so he was not deterred by this confrontation. He continued his nightly trek.)
The next night, while he was walking across this yard, he tripped and fell over a drainage rock that was sitting in the middle of the path. (He swears that this was strategically placed.) In order to avoid tripping over it in the future, he tossed the rock into the bushes.
…And… at that very moment, Mr. Cailey lept out of the bush and snapped a photo.
The next afternoon, two policemen came to our door to arrest my dad for throwing the rock. He wasn’t home at the time, so my mom was instructed to tell her husband to turn himself in at the courthouse after he came home. At which point, they would arrest him. Can you believe this? So that night after dinner, my dad (being the hardened criminal that he was) picked up his Scientific American Magazine, and headed downtown to pay his debt to society. He actually DID spend the night in jail (which he was less than happy about). In the end, he was let go because the grounds for the arrest were downright dumb.
Anyway, to finish up the story, things wound up OK… My Dad took Mr. Cailey to court and won. His record was expunged, and the neighborhood association was granted the right to pave a “scenic walkway” through Mr. Cailey’s landscaped street (for walkers like my dad to use).
The funny thing is… this whole story was written up in the Spartanburg Herald Journal. And so, years later, when one of us recounts the story… many listeners will jump up and say… “I SAW that in the paper….that was YOUR husband????…or that was YOUR father???”
Yep, the Jungs were the “buzz” of Spartanburg for a week. True story!!!
And that about wraps up Spartanburg.
Now for the free pattern!
You can download it here. This is a traditional bow-tie pattern with a little something special. The centers of the bow ties stand up off the quilt 3-dimensionally. Super cool, right?

🙂

Spartanburg sounds like quite a place – I think I would really love Wade’s. And the story about your dad – so crazy! Almost hard to believe, but somehow not – every town seems to have a Mr. Cailey (though thankfully not all of them have the landscaping crew at hand!)
Love your story. Thanks for the BowTie pattern. Hope to make it soon. I live in Murphysboro, IL. It is a small town. Murphysboro is famous for the 17th Street Bar an Grill. Make the best BBQ. We are getting ready for annual Apple Festival. Will be fun with the big parade, apple pie and all things made from apples. Thanks so much for a chance to win your contest.
Wow! Just picking up and moving across country….awesome. Good luck in your new venture.
BTW………Birds and Berries is just beautiful.
So, Does Mr. Cailey still live there ? And how did he get away with blocking off an entire street ?
He no longer lives in the neighborhood. As soon as things calmed down, he and his family moved to the country! Can you believe that?

I just love that story about your dad! Thanks for sharing!
Wow, how brave and inspirational are you guys. I hope it all goes really well for you.
Your Dad sounds like a hoot. My favorite “Dad” story was when Dad walked me down the aisle, handed me over to my husband, Dad walked across the train of my dress to get back to his seat. He left big black footprints in the middle of the train of my wedding down. When I tried to walk forward with my fiance to the front of the church, it was like I was nailed to the floor, because my Dad was standing on my dress. It was like an episode of Monty Python. The photographer had to arrange the folds of my train to hide the shoeprints at photo time. My Dad died 2 years ago, I miss him every day.
I enjoyed the story of your dad. I bet growing up at your house was fun!
You have been liked on FB.

What a great story! Only in America would your dad get in trouble for throwing a rock and Mr. Cailey would not get in trouble for landscaping a thru road!
Great story! Good for your dad (walking and holding his own). But today I’m affraid someone would hire a hit man for the neighbor and have the street replaced LOL!!!!!

This is my favorite pattern so far! I’m trying to see how you quilted it. It looks like you stitched in the ditch? I’ll be making this one.
Yes, it’s just stitched in the ditch. Sometimes less is more!

Debbie

Love the “origami” bow ties – they are so much fun to make! Wades sounds like my kind of restaurant and their billboards are a hoot!
Love the 3D bowties !
I liked your story – your father is a determined man.
But I have so many questions.
Was traffuc allowed down the road beyond the ‘stop’sign? Or was it supposed to exit that road somewhere else?
Did Mr Cailey plan all this without anyone finding out?
Was the land his? What happened to the traffic?
Will I ever know?
Okay, let’s see:
Our neighborhood had 2 entrances. So everyone had to turn around, go back out, and then drive to the other entrance.
The land was not Mr. Cailey’s. And it caused quite a stir. Teenagers just plowed right throw to the other side in cars and bikes, until Mr. Cailey placed big logs in the way! So Kids would move the logs. Then they placed steel bars in cement holes to do the trick.
Their yard was T.P.ed so many times!!!!
Love your stories and your fabrics!

What a unique story and glad that it had a positive outcome. I’m amazed that Cailey could do that with public right of ways over “people not stopping for a road sign. Amazing!

I got really excited about your Shelf adventure. Very disappointed to see that it is not set up for iPad. That is something I would only be interested in doing on my iPad. I do all my shopping on the pad not at my stationary computer.

Wade’s opened in 1947, by Wade and Betty Lindsey. It is still run by family members.
And they even have a phone line that you can call, to hear what the menu is for the day!
Gotta love that!!!

Those new Candy cuts of Moda’s have been a wonderful success!
I am really enjoying this bloghop. All of you are so creative. I have been trying to find this bow tie pattern for some time. Now I can get busy on it. Thanks
I loved reading your blog entries. They were lough-out-loud funny! Good for your Dad, for standing up to the neighbour! The little 3-D bow tie quilt is adorable! Your new adventure is fascinating – I wish you well on your new site. I’ll give it a try! Online shopping from Canada, especially with US stores, can sometimes be an adventure! Quilt shops, however, have already figured it out!
Loved your story!
I just purchased “Birds and Berries” to make quilts for my grand daughters.

Unbelieveble that road story, and the road is still closed? That is impossible!
I want that to, we live one a road used by lots of cyclists who seem to have to shout while cycling, closing the road would keep them quit I think
Regards Miranda

Sounds like a great place to live! Love Birds and Berries!
I really enjoyed reading your story about your Dad, but was really confused about how someone can just take away a road? Did the land the road is on belong to him, or the town? Anyway, good for your Dad for refusing to give in!!! Love the three-dimensional bow-ties…very unique!
Sounds like you have a v-e-r-y adventurous family!
Oh, you don’t know the half of it!!! 🙂

What a good, small town story. And people think nothing happens in a small town!
Well, I love your dad. I am not a rule-follower type of person and I think it is GREAT that there are more people out there like us… at least I hope there are. Because we need us in this world to question the rule-makers. Anyway, LOVELY story. I loved it. Thanks for the giveaway 🙂
Your story is so great! I also live in a small town (Cardwell, Montana) where everyone has been the talk of the town for some reason or another (some pretty dumb on a boring day), but usually it doesn’t get published in the paper. Love you fabric and thank you for participating in the blog hop!
What a great story about your dad! Love the giveaway– thank you!

Don’t you just love spunky dad stories. My dad would have been right there cheering your dad on! Sadly my dad passed away several years ago, but we still laugh (sometimes so hard we cry) over his antics! A great way to start my week off – thanks for the story.
I love your new site – Shelf Inc. I went to it, established an account and took the tute. I am having a difficult time navigating. Can I only shop those places you have listed? I tried to go to the FAQs but the window would not open.
I would like to see the following added:
Lands End
LL Bean
quilt shops
I will keep trying to use the site because I really think it is a great idea. It would save me a lot of time.
Loved the story! Even though it involved an arrest and jail time it ended in a good way. Really like the 3D bow ties. Can’t wait to try them out.

Love the story about your dad!!! Thanks for the cute bowtie pattern and giveaway!!
There once was a man named Jung,
Whose neighbors rocks he had flung.
Ended up in the slammer,
Created a clammer,
But famous he did become.
In her blog, his daughter extolled,
While fabric she successfully sold.
Now, more know the story
Of the Jung family glory
And what a HUGE reputation they hold.
PS: Love you guys!!
Thanks, Cathy, dear friend!!
Chip made a copy of your poem!!
Lauren loves it too!
Thanks for the fun story and the giveaway. This is my first visit to your blog and enjoyed it.
Hilarious story about your dad. People are so crazy!
Reading about your father reminds me of my own – if given the same circumstances, he would have done the exact same thing – I think it is a sign of the generation….what would we have done w/o them?
Thanks for a chance to win. I like the 3D look
Your bow-tie quilt is adorable! Thanks for the free pattern. And for the Spartanburg stories. For some reason, my husband seems to think Spartanburg would be a good place to retire someday. I’ve never been there…
I loved your story – so glad it turned out alright!
Oh.My.GOODNESS.
Ok, so at first your story about crazy Mr Cailey was funny. And so I read it to my husband. Who got really mad! hahaha. He can’t understand how someone can just do what they like to city property, and actually get away with it!
That is the weirdest story ever. It’s like a scene from “Grumpy Old Men”!
hahaha. I’m still laughing.

Great story. Thank you for participating in this blog hop. It’s fun to read all the comments.
I agree! It’s my favorite part of the blog hop! 🙂
Thanks for participating!
I love these bow ties! Thanks for the chance to win!!
Oh wow, I totally enjoyed that story! A sort of similar thing (I don’t think there were any arrest, though) occurred in WA to the quilt shop owner in the small town we used to live in. You guessed it…some person got tired of traffic or something and closed the road off themselves, wreaking havoc since this was a country road, and to go around and not be able to use the road the original way added a few miles to most everyone else’s commute! I’m glad it sort of got worked out and your dad was found not guilty!
Love your mini quilt and the fabric! 🙂
I absolutely loved the story about your father – fabulous piece of Americana! Thanks for sharing it with us!
Great story about your dad and the fabric is too yummy!
It’s stories like your dad’s that are the reason we love living in a “not- famous- for-anything” town, too! Just normal people making the best of life each day! And I DO love the 3-d pop ups in your bowties…very cute!
Thanks! I think it’s always nice to add a little something extra to each project. And these bowties are really easy to sew…even the 3-D centers.

Loved the story about your Dad. I have to tell you of my little town. I live in a small town in Kentucky just down the road from Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, a national park. We celebrate Lincoln Days in October with a weekend of parades, quilt shows, costume contests, rail splitting contests and some of the most yummy food and crafts you can imagine. Our entire little town is transformed.

I love your fabric collection. The colors are awesome. Sure hope I win the fabric, I will make your darling little quilt.
I’m originally from Greenville, SC, so to see the “sister city” highlighted was fun (I live in Canada now, though!). I loved the story about your dad and the neighbor! LOL I also just discovered your fabrics just a few weeks ago, when I was looking for and orange-and-teal mix with which to make a quilt for my soon-to-be daughter-in-law. Those are her wedding colors, so I wanted to make a quilt to be a reminder of the wedding. Your Birds & Berries won, and I now have my layer cake cut and ready to begin making her quilt. The more I work with it, the more I love it! Thanks!
Oh, that’s a quilt I would LOVE to see!!!
Please send us a pic when you finish!!!!

Sometimes I wonder what some people do who don’t sew… Clearly, this neighbor needs a new hobby! And your Dad is a scorch!
That was quite a story! I am amazed that the town left the road closed and didn’t open it and then bill Mr Cailey.
Too funny…thanks for the good laugh! Thanks for sharing part of your world! Lisa in Texas
Yes, that was quite the story. You had a vision, and now you have begin to make it come true. Good luck and way to go. You go, girl. You certainly have quite the giveaway. Just in time to make a lap quilt now that the fall colors are out and the nights are getting cooler.

Barb
Love the story about your dad.
Great story! Sometimes neighbors can be challenging.
I’m totally in shock about your story where someone could just dig up a road, and then your Dad was the one who got arrested. Very crazy and funny.
Thanks for such a great story about your Dad! I downloaded your 3D tie pattern. I think it will make a wonderful quilt for my grandson.

kittymom7@aol.com
That is one of the best stories I’ve heard. I can just see your dad taking his walk as if nothing had changed. Hard to believe the grump neighbor actually got away with interferring with a public road! People sure are funny. I can’t wait to make your bow tie pattern!
I loved your story about your Father. It’s great to hear about someone standing up for their beliefs. I’m from Neenah WI, about 40 miles south of Green Bay. I love to quilt, but since my new great granddaughter was born in April, she is a priority right now. We make baby quilts for baptism at our church as a gift to the parents. We talk more than sew and then have to catch up at home. Nice to meet you
It’s nice to meet you too! Thanks for stopping by!
Great story about your dad! And will definitely be checking out Shelf! Thanks!
The story of your dad was fabulous!
Thanks for the giveaway.
Thanks for sharing your family story! The closest I can come to it is when the town cop stopped at our house to see why my Dad was letting his daughters ditch hop with the old brown car. WHAT?!!! Ok. So Dad sold the old brown car to a couple of high school boys who did not carry through with changing the title, and when they took the car ditch hopping, one of the bumpers was left behind with the license plate still attached. So of course the cop came to investigate. Pretty exciting when you live in a small town. Shucks, I delivered the newspaper to the cops house for years, and he knew I was not a ditch-hoppin kind of girl!
That’s hilarious! That actually made me think of another cop/dad story that I have! Ha! My dad used to travel a lot for his business… and traveling a lot usually means that you kill a lot more deer while driving… statistics are against you. Anyway, he ran into a deer early one morning… Then later that afternoon, he was pulled over and told to get out of the car with his hands up.
Apparently there had been a hit-and-run earlier that day in the same color and car model that he was driving. Plus, with his dented in bumper, he looked pretty guilty. Anyway, he walked the cops up to the front of the car, and there was still some “signs” that the deer had been there, if you catch my drift…. so they apologized and let him go. Ha!
Ditch hopping sounds very southern! 🙂 Kids in our town used to go “mudding”. I was never allowed to so I’m not really sure what that entailed.
What a great story — thanks for sharing! =)
What a great story about you dad. Thanks for the pattern and the fabric giveaway.
That is an hysterical story. I do love small towns!
I loved the story about your Dad, so I figured I would share one about mine. One time (at band camp, NO just kidding LOL), shortly after my best friend and I got our license we were driving around the block. That’s all, we just kept driving around the block, around in circles, it’s about a 1.5 mile block. Well my dad was sitting on the front porch and he just kept watching us. About the 4th or 5th time we passed by, I looked on the porch and Dad was not sitting there. All of a sudden my friend starts cracking up and pointing to my Dad standing right in the middle of the yard like a statue mooning us!! He did not move a muscle, he just stood there with his pants down bent over! We laughed so hard and we still laugh about it when one of us brings it up. I don’t even know how many of neighbors saw my crazy Dad out there . My Dad passed away 2 years ago, my friend and I are now 35 and still laugh about it to this day… So thanks for sharing your story about your Dad because it made me think of mine…
Awe, what a funny story. I’m sorry to hear that he passed away! And I’m glad that you were able to tell your story here!
My mom doesn’t get the “band camp” reference, but I did. 🙂 So kudos for working that in there as well!
The best stories are the family stories. Your colors are so pretty. Thank you for the contest.
Family stories are the best! You can’t make up stuff like this. Thanks for the pattern, and the stories!
Great story, I can see how he was the talk of the town for a few days. Thanks for sharing and for the chance at your giveaway.
What a great blog, you are so funny! Love your fabrics. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing a hilarious story! Your dad sounds like my dad – doesn’t take anything from anybody.
Fun story (although your dad probably didnt think so at the time!). I live in SC too, got to love those “meat and three” restaurants! The billboards are clever, I will have to look for them the next time I head up towards Spartanburg.
Oh my goodness!! I had no idea yall were SC gals! I live in Lexington (though I’m from Charleston) … went to college in lil’ ol’ Clinton! 🙂 Thanks so much for the free pattern –it’s perfect for little boy babies born round here. 🙂
I liked yall on FB, too!
Thank you so much! And check out our other free patterns on our website!!!
I love the story about your dad. Nothing so dramatic in my family!
Greetings from Iowa City, IA!!!!
Great story about your dad. I am surprised that the town let the roadblock stay…can’t say that would be allowed in my neck of the woods, but sounds like it’s still there?
I love making bow-tie blocks the 3D way! Cute quilt with great fabric!!
Your little bowties are so cute! Love the story about your Dad; everyone needs a little notoriety!
Oh my gosh, that’s so funny about your Dad. How in the world could that man actually just close the street off like that and claim it as his own property? That’s just insane. No one stops at the stop sign by our house either and it’s gotten worse over the years. I don’t know how we’ve never had a bad accident at that corner. Heck, even the school bus blows through that sign which really upsets me considering they are driving grade school aged children. I certainly can’t block that road though. That’s crazy. LOL
I love the 3D effect you’ve given to the quilt. Thank you.
What a great story about your dad! So many great facets; it sounds made for TV. 🙂
What a nice bow tie quilt pattern. Thanks for the opportunity for the giveaway! Lana
I’d love to have your dad as my neighbor! What a hoot!!
Thanks for the opportunity to win great fabric! Love your site!
I still can’t get over it that it’s okay to grass up a road, but not walk on the grass! There sure are a lot of funny hometown stories on this blog tour. This particular blog got my attention because my daughter’s name is Jessi and her daughter’s name is Lauren.
Do you have any Carrie’s??? She is my other daughter, and a new member of our company.
Carrie’s specialty is purses and totes. So look for her new designs in the near future!
Love your 3D Bowtie pattern it is too cute! I can’t wait to make it. Maybe if I win this great fabric I will use it. Thank you for the chance!
I just love the story about your Dad-good for him for standing up to outrageous behavior! Thank you, too, for the chance to win your giveaway.
Thanks for the wonderful bowtie pattern. Love the blog hop too.

The 3-D centers really make a difference between creating a nice block, and creating a block with that extra punch! Try it!
Love the bow tie pattern. Enjoyed reading your true story.
I’m just waiting for my husband to do something like that just to get in a paper to hold over our daughter’s head as a threat for embarrassing her with dates in the future.
I love your designs! They really have been beautiful lines.
Thank you so much!

Your fabrics are fantastic – I am a big fan!
Thank you for the opportunity.
I love your dad story. Your town sounds kind of like ours. Not many people and not much happening. Your bow tie quilt is darling.
I think you dad’s a hoot and bless him for sticking to his guns but I have to say, I think the cranky neighbor was pretty enterprising and resourceful for trying to solve “his problem”! who would DO that?! And 3-D bow ties are one of my favorite blocks! Cute project!!
I’m afraid if I ate at your favorite restaurant I would be bigger than a house. I love your fabrics and would love to win. The story about your dad sounds like my dad!
Best-Pam G.
I have a good friend who lived in Spartenburg for a while. Your Dad sounds like a very likeable man. I really like your new fabric line.
Thanks for sharing your home town with us. The story about your dad is hilarious (although I’m sure at the time it wasn’t!). Thanks also for the pattern and the giveaway!
All good stories involve an arrest!! 🙂 Or at the very least a police presence. haha
Life, life, life!!!
Ya gotta love life!!!
I love the story about your Dad. Thanks for the chance to win.
It is kind of funny what can happen with neighbors…but sometimes it can go really bad. Glad your story has a good ending! Love the 3-d bow ties!

Awesome story about your dad! 😉 thanks so much for the giveaway!
I cannot understand how Mr Cailey could legally close off a public street!! That would never fly in our town. Thanks for the story. It was fun to read about, and I’m glad that your Dad at least can still walk his favorite route.
That has to be one of the best stories I have heard in a while. Thanks for a sharing it. Also looking forward to trying out this pattern. It is intriquing with the 3d in it. Thanks for a chance to win!

Your dad’s story is great. Amazing what a furore some people can cause 🙂
I live in Menasha, WI, not far from Green Bay. I love this area of Wisconsin and it’s four beautiful seasons, each one special in its own way. I love your blog and photos!
I love that you call your hometown ‘The Burg’ as I’m from Townsville in sunny North Queensland, Australia and I too fondly refer to it as ‘The Ville’. That’s a great story about your Dad! Thanks for the awesome giveaway.
🙂 Your story is a great one to pass down for generations! This is the first day of the blog hop for me and what a great way to start out! I am crazy for the photo of the newest fabrics …… Feel good fabric….. And now I am going to read about your new adventure…… Thanks for sharing!

I think that’s my favorite combination too. Thank you!
I’m impressed with your dad’s rebellion! The bow ties are darling and I can’t wait to try the dimensional center. Good luck with your adventure!
Great story about your dad! My dad would have done the same thing. When ever I rode in the car with him and caught him speeding, I’d tell him what the speed limit was. He’d **always** say, “Oh that’s just a suggestion.” Dads are funny guys!! I sure miss mine as he’s in Heaven now. Thanks for the chance to win some of your beautiful fabric!
Great story and I like your dad!! Thanks for the opportunity to win your beautiful fabric!

I live in Daytona Beach, Fl and there are several annual events that are famous..

Loved the story about your father. It is one that grandchildren will love for generations . I also love the bow ties.
Love the story about your Dad. I would have thought you couldn’t block a road and make it part of your garden.
Sounds like a sweet little town! Thank you for sharing the story about your dad too!
Thanks so much for sharing. And the mini is so cute!
Ha! The story about your dad is awesome! I am glad he won in court because somehow the justice system gets swayed to do dumb things themselves. Thanks for the post and all your amazing work!
Thanks for a chance to win. OMG, your fabrics and colors are gorgeous. Thanks for a tour of your town.
What a great story, I loved reading your blog about your dad. I can’t believe the guy was allowed to sequester public land like that. He should have be the one taken to jail for stealing public land and causing a public nescience. Your dad was a hero!! I also love your shelf online new adventure. Maybe one day it could be available to us Aussies down under. And maybe you could have a patchwork shops version. 🙂 Awesome. Hope it goes really well. Well I live in Melbourne, Australia.
That certainly is food for thought! Thanks for your comment.
I love the colors in your new fabric line and the way you used them in the bow tie quilt.
Wow, that was hilarious, I know , I know, not at the time, but really, the people who live on this planet!! I feel sorry for the police officers who have to enforce this kind of nonsense, bet it wasn’t their best day either. This a fabulous givewaway, and thanks for the tour.
Thanks for the chance to win! Love all your fabric lines and patterns!
I live in Luxembourg, moved here in December so do not have yet many stories about it. My home town, a little suburb of Buenos Aires, in Argentina, is the place I will always love! Thanks for the chance to win!
Good story although I don’t understand how someone can block off a public road and get away with it.
Hi! {Waves from Brisbane, Australia} I’m a Facebook fan. I’m enjoying this blog hop. Thank you for participating!

Wow that was an amazing story about the road…I don’t think anyone would get away with that here! LOL
Wow – I can’t believe someone can just stop a road like that. That is a story that will live for generations and it’s a good thing it is documented. Funny! Thanks for the chance.
Love the story. Love your fabrics. Thanks for chance to win.
Thanks for a chance to win some fabric. Love the pattern giveaway. Haven’t made bowties before so will definitely give this a go.
You will love making bowties this way! It’s kind of addictive!
Great story about your dad! That sounds like something that would happen in the small towns here in New England! I grew up in a very small town in New Hampshire. When my sister’s kids moved out of state they would send letters to my Dad with addresses like: “the funny old guy with the mustache” and his street address. Everyone knew it was my Dad and he’d get a huge kick out of it. Thank you for your generous giveaway!
Looks great–love the bright colors and fun ideas. It also made me hungry! Your Dad is a hoot.
that’s a funny story!! Thanks for the chance to win too.
Thanks for the adorable mini. Wade’s sounds great!!!
Great story and even greater giveaway. Thanks for such a great pattern.
I love it when people refuse to be pushed around! Congratulations to your Dad and your family for your spunk! The spunk also shows up in your fabric!
What a nice compliment!!! Thank you!!!
what a funny story! enjoyed it very much
Great story! Love your bowtie quilt. Thanks!
Your dad sounds so fun. Love your pattern!
Great story, love your blog. Thanks for the giveaway.
You are almost a neighbor. I am in Matthews, NC, just outside of Charlotte.
The fabrics look yummy!
That story about your dad would have played out much differently in my town. The new landscaping would have been ripped out immediately, Mr. Cailey would have been arrested for tampering with a public thoroughfare and made to pay for repaving the road. But it’s really funny how it did play out. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the chance to win.
I still can’t wrap my head around someone being able to block off a street! Love your fabrics! Thanks
I found your story very entertaining. Amazing what one person can do.
Your fabric is lovely. Thanks for the pattern and give away.
What a funny story about your Dad especially since it has been saved in archives (newspaper) just in case for reference! thanks for the chance to win your greatgiveaway.
Such an interesting story about the closed street and your dad’s arrest. Goodness sakes! I worked briefly for a couple of lawyers a decade ago. Most calls from prospective clients were about property issues, so I’m not surprised about the neighborhood man’s nasty behavior. I remember one instance when a man changed his mind about suing his neighbor after explaining to me in detail that his neighbor had chopped down a small tree planted near the property line. The man said, “I think it might be the Christian thing to do to just forget the whole thing and forgive my neighbor.”
The bow-tie quilt is adorable, by the way. Gorgeous fabric, too.
wow! that’s a great family story. Can’t imagine a neighbor just cutting off a street like that – crazy!
Wow. That someone could just close a street is so wild. Bravo to your dad. What a hoot. And thank you for sharing your neat pattern and goodies.
love love your fabric – hope I get a sampling of it –
That is an awesome story! Some people can be so cranky sometimes. Your dad really showed him!
I’m baffled by how someone can get away with blocking off a street, rerouting traffic patterns, without going through official channels! Thank you for sharing.
blueberryblues5(at)gmail(dot)com
Thank you for the tour. Your dad’s 15 minutes of fame were, uncomfortably, longer than most.
Beautiful new line.
Love your fabric. Thanks for the pattern. Loved your story. This is my first blog hop aand I am really enjoying it. Thanks again.
Moda’s blog hops are so awesome! When EVERY designer provides giveaways, along with free patterns…….it’s a win – win, right?
What a tale! I don’t understand how Mr. C could block off part of a city road. Was it his property? Was it actually a city road? Can you explain how the city allowed him to do that? Yes, I’m downloading the bowtie pattern. Thank you!
That’s the thing….they couldnt’ okay it when they didn’t even know about it until after the fact!
Your fabric is gorgeous. We used to be your neighbor – sortof. My husband was attending Ambassador Baptist College in Lattimore, NC, and he worked at Nestle in Gaffney. We spent a lot of time in Spartanburg. His doctor was there, and when we bought our Ford Excursion, it came with a sticker for your high school football team. (awesome team, by the way.) Now we live back where we came from in Pinedale, Wyoming. Nice to “meet” you 🙂
Love the fabrics! thanks for the chance to win. 🙂
I loved the story about your dad. . .I live in a town where I could so very easily see something like that happening. And it would most certainly make the front page of the local news 🙂 Thanks for the cute post!
I love the story about your dad! I haven’t made a bow tie quilt in ages but your pattern has me motivated. Thanks for the chance to win.
Love the story about your dad! What a hoot! Most families do have their one-time-claim-to-fame family story that they all crack up about when someone shares it!
Love the story about your Dad, and I would love to eat at Wade’s!
That story is amazing! I actually can’t believe someone could actually close a road and get away with it!! Glad your dad stood up for his rights! Great fabrics! Thanks.
I would love to win some of that beautiful fabric and I love the story about your dad, love that he stuck to his guns!
Beautiful fabrics! Thanks for sharing.
Great story about your Dad. Love your fabric!
okay, that story has me in serious giggle fits at work! I have friends in Spartanburg – it’s very nice!
I hope your friends don’t know Mr. Cailey!!!
By the way, that’s not his real name!
Whew!
What a hilarious story, a man after my own heart. I love your little pattern, I have to make it!
I think your Dad was right! Glad he was cleared! Why are some people so weird about stuff…..there is another word for it but I won’t use it hear…..
thanks for the giveaway!
Someday I will visit South Carolina, especially since some of my Texas ancestry migrated from there. Fun stories, love that your Dad was apparently just as onery as the neighbor!
Yes, Mr. Cailey certainly met his match with Chip!
What a fun story about your dad. Love the cute pattern. Thanks for sharing your hometown!
This post was just so funny. It sounds like you have a merry time down there in SC. Thank you for the neat quilt pattern.
How fun to have Sparkle City as your hometown. Apparently the “deadend” story remains alive, and funny enough to repeat often. . .loved it.
Love your pattern and would love to win one of the precuts. Thanks!
Hi, I LOVE Andie MacDowell! She’s one of my favorite actresses. Coming from my part of the country (Salem, OR), Spartanburg sounds ‘exotic’ and Southern, and…well, now I’ve heard ‘tell’ of hardened criminals there! LOL. Anyway, I loved your story, and your collection is beautiful–great rich colors. Keep up the great work!
LOVED the story about the dead end. lol.
That story about your dad is so funny! Thanks for the chance to win.
Love the post . . . and the fabric!
Thanks for sharing the story about your Dad. The bowtie pattern is really cute. Just finished a mini bowtie quilt but it didn’t have the 3D centers. Something new for me to try:)
Thank you for the Bowtie pattern. I love the story about your father, it reminds me of the way my dad would have responded to that type of situation. Thanks for the chance for the giveaway.
Your new fabric line is so cheerful! How very fun — keep up the great creativity.
I love that story! How funny. I am surprised someone could just block off a street and the city was ok with it.
I’m surprised the city decided that a scenic sidewalk was the acceptable solution – not putting the street back in order. How odd!
The new fabric is just gorgeous!
Well, the county council felt that it would be too expensive to return the road to its original purpose.
Oh, I just LOVE government.
What a fun post! Thanks for the lovely giveaway and the best of luck on your new venture!
Cute story and I love the new fabric, it is so cheerful.
Did you know that there’s a book by quilt historian Laurel Horton about a Spartenburg SC quilter called “Mary Black’s Family Quilts? If not take a look. Thanks for your fascinating story!
I did know that! Actually, I have checked that very book out of our library several times!
What a great story! You gotta love it! Thanks for the giveaway. This blog hop has been great!
Great story, and thanks for telling us about your hometown.

Nice fabric! Loved the story about your father. Thanks for the chance to win.
i can’t believe that the neighbor just closed off the street! and that was allowed?? craziness.
WOO HOO….that is quite a story!!!! Pretty crazy neighbor you had there (G)!!!! Glad your Dad came out of it ok…and smart man to bring a magazine to jail !!! I would have brought something quilt related. Thanks for the chance to win. XXX
They confiscated his magazine!!!
What a great story to pass down in your family! You have beautiful fabrics. I like the 3-dimensional Bow-tie quilt. I have a Bow-tie quilt I bought a few years ago at a little shop in Sutter Creek, Ca. It is made from 1930’s fabrics, and I love the bright colors. Just like your fabrics, it always makes me smile.
I love that your dad is a freedom fighter! Nice that he’s not so famous that he can’t go to Disney World, but is still well-known. 🙂
That is a great story. I cant imagine spending a night in jail though….
Am loving the bright colors. The fabric just seems happy!
Thanks for sharing your great family story. I love your new fabric line and thank you also for the great pattern.

I just ordered a jelly roll of your new fabric. Love the colors!
Oh, look for our Petunia Patch pattern in shops! It takes 1 jelly roll and it highlights Birds and Berries!
WOW that was quite a history story…imagine closing off a street today. Your fabrics are always so ‘yummy’. Thanks for the chance to win a sweet treat of ‘Birds and Berries’.

Love your fabric! And your story about your crazy neighbor! That beats even my crazy neighbor stories (and unfortunately I have a few!) 🙂
Thanks for sharing your story. Love your fabrics.
I have been to Spartanburg and have relatives that live there. My Uncle was a math prof at Wofford until he retired last year. I was there through work quite a few years ago to go to Milliken and learn more about textiles! Fun connection – and you are my favorite Moda designer.
Thanks SOOOOO MUCH!!!
Great story! Love your fabric.
Thanks
Hahaha. That’s such a great story! I have some crazy neighbors, but none that quite reach Mr. Cailey level 🙂
I love that your Dad did not let the landscaping stop him…too funny. Love your fabrics.
Love your story and beautiful project!!
At least in Spartanburg, you don’t have the giant butt masquerading as a peach! :o) haha
And, I think Lizard’s Thicket is better than Wade’s. Perhaps I’ll convince hubby to make a special trip for me to test my theory!
Hahah! I love the giant peach! We drove all the way across the country and didn’t pass anything that could compete! My dad works in Gaffney. I’ll have to ask about the Lizard’s Thicket.
I love, love, love the story about your dad. It fits right into the time-honored subcategory of fiction: funny Southern hometown tales. Thanks for sharing. (And, “Go, Dad!”)
The story about your dad is priceless. I also love the way the bow tie centers stand up. Thanks for the chance to win some fantastic fabric.
I love the photos of the fabrics , its like candy fr us fabriholics
I love your fabric it is the perfect combination of modern and traditional!!!
Thank you so much for noticing that!!!
That is exactly what we are after!!!
wow, that is one crazy story!! How can some one just get rid of the road, surely it belongs to the council, or whatever your administrative bodies are called! I can’t believe that, that man is crazy!
Love the story about your dad and the bowties! Thanks for sharing!
wow! i can’t believe that the neighbor can closed off the street just like that too!
guess, it will be cheaper to just move house?!
But your dad is so brave, stood his ground! **salute**
Thanks for the pattern and early morning laugh!!
Beautiful fabric! Such a fun story about your dad!
I love all things in nature, except snakes, so I love the designs you have with the titles from nature. Beautiful colors!! Not usually a fan of orange but this color works well in your collection with the blue. Thanks for participating in the Moda Blog Hop and thanks for an opportunity to win a part of your fabric.
I hate snakes too! But it’s funny that you should mention snakes. In our first line, Botany, we actually did submit a print with a couple of snakes included….cute ones in our opinion. But Moda said, “no, too scary!”
And they do give good advice!
Love your fabric. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win. So kind. pegwatkins@comcast.net
Thanks!! We wish everyone could win! Truly!!!
Really enjoyed your story, isn’t life made up of the most wonderful stories, thanks for the giveaway too!
What a great story! Every town needs a hero to deal with bullies and curmudgeons.
What’s a curmudgeon???
I LOVE YOUR FABRIC!!!! THANKS FOR THE AWESOME GIVEAWAY!
That is a fantastic story! I can’t believe the neighbor was allowed to keep the Dead End!?!? wow. Thanks for that, though. Hilarious!
Soon after all of that, they moved to the country!

I’m really hoping to win…and, that’s a fantastic story about your dad. Awesome!
The bow tie quilt is so clever and I love the bright colors!
Yep, neighbors can be weird. They expect you to agree with all their weirdness. We live more in the country now, not totally isolated, but more so than living in the suburbs. All is well – so far. Love your fabric and can’t wait to see your new book!!
Wow – I can’t believe that the neighbor was allowed to do that! He should have been the one arrested for blocking a city street. Glad it all worked out well for your dad. And it makes for a great family story – I’d be telling everyone I knew if it happened to my dad! Thanks for the story and for the chance to win!
Loved the story! Thanks for a chance to win.
HA! That is hilarious about the neighbor. Like some of your other commenters, I can’t believe he got away with tearing up the street!! How crazy!!
Beautiful fabric! Thanks for the chance to win!

LOL!! Oh what a hilarious story!! And THAT is why small towns get the reputation that they do, lol!!
I love this blog hop, it is so fun to get to know a little more about people’s home towns and by extension the person themselves. Thanks for sharing with us.
Oh my goodness, how funny! Not at the time, nor to your dad, but in retrospect that has to just be the craziest story I’ve heard in a while!
Love that little quilt! I’ve been way into minis lately as I’ve been assembling NICU quilts. That one looks like a lot of fun. 🙂
I’ve been to Spartanburg! My aunt and uncle and a good friend from college live there. I love the story about your dad!
Loved the story – it is always good to be part of a famous family!
Loved your story – it is always good to be part of a famous family!
Well, I truly laughed out loud for real while reading the story about your dad. So funny.
And I love the little quilt. I’m not sure I understand how the middles of the bowties stand out yet, but I’ll figure it out.
Thanks for the giveaway and the good laugh.
Good for your dad for standing up for what he believe in…if it were me I would’ve picked up another rock and thrown it at the guys head…jk. Thanks for the chance to win.
Love that story about your dad… That is just great. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love the 3-D bowtie pattern. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before but it’s really cute & clever
Thank-you so much for the bow tie pattern! It will be perfect for scraps!
My parents now live in the little town of Wallsburg which all the residents also lovingly refer to as “The Burg”. What a great family story though and thanks for sharing.

That is a funny story! I suppose back them there were less permits needed to just close up a roadway! Imagine that happening overnight now?
Loved the story about your father. Terrific giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win!
OMG, what a great and hilarious story. I can just imagine the grandchildren looking at your dad and challenging him when they’ve been told they did something wrong and telling him at least they didn’t get arrested!!
Great story. Love the Birds and Berries line!
So funny! My dad had a crazy run-in with a neighbor which involved police and then the EPA. Fortunately, my dad avoided any jail time. I kind of think, though, that he enjoyed the whole experience. He’s a pretty straight-laced nice guy, so I think he was secretly thrilled to feel like a cowboy outlaw for a few weeks. 🙂
Intrigue! Espionage! A Rock! That story has it all!
Wow that was quite a story. Love the bow tie quilt. Thank you. Janita
Wow, you are the daughter of an overnight criminal rock thrower, now how exciting is that. I’ll bet it is a hoot when you all get together and the story is being told. I live in Missouri and Old Drum is my claim to fame but I am afraid to tell my story because I don’t want to spend 24 hours in the hoosgaw!!! Thanks for a chance to win.
I really love your fabric, such beautiful colors and fun patterns. That story about your dad rocks! I can’t believe your neighbor could change the street so drastically and then claim trespassing on the property. CRAZY! You really made me laugh with that one.
That story is hilarious!!! Loved it!
Love your fabric line and the mystery of your story. Thanks for the chance!
I love living in the country without close neighbors…they are about 2 acres away. Still a bit too close.
Love the story and the fabric
Love your fabrics! Thanks for the chance to win!
Love the Bow Tie Pattern

Amanda
I love your story (and your fabric). And your good with your new venture.
Beautiful fabrics and good luck with your new venture!!
Poor Dad…Why didn’t you guys bail him out? I want to try your bow tie quilt!…need some cool fabric!
Wow! What a story! So Mr. Cailey could just stop the road? I live in a city and what I found out to be a busy street. I need to know his contractors so I can build a park to stop traffic down my block. hahahahaha. I am glad your dad won. What a story. I can’t wait to tell my husband and daughters about this. It would have been over dinner but tonight is the Packers vs Bears game (GO PACK) so it will be over snacks!
I loved the story about your Dad…what a character! Now about your fabric, the colors are right up my alley…Orange, that certain color of blue and a bit of yellow makes a cheerful quilt or table topper. Thank You for the generous giveaway.
I have an image in my head of your dad and HE ROCKS (no pun intented). I love your 3D bowtoes – that is super clever 🙂 Thanks for teh chance to win yummy fabric!
I live in Fresno, California. William Saroyan is from Fresno. Thanks for your beautiful designs.
Please, please, please include me in your fabulous giveaway! I loved the story about your Dad and @ass neighbor. I also wish they had restaurants like Wade’s where I live although I’d probably weigh 300 lbs if they did!
Still laughing about the your story. Love it. The new fabric is wonderful.
People are funnier than just about anything, aren’t they? My husband’s uncle lived in your town. He was in the FBI, so maybe you never met him. I imagine he kept a low profile…I love your fabric and would be thrilled to win, of course! thanks for the chance.
This blog hop is the first time I’ve entered fabric giveaways on blogs. Hopefully there will be some first timer luck. Loved your story and your designs are gorgeous. Good luck with Shelf.
Don’t you just love small towns. The good thing about small towns is everyone knows everyone – the bad thing is that everyone knows everyone. I’m one of 7 and any one of us could walk in a store and they’d say “Hey aren’t you Leroy and Rosina’s daughter?” I love small town stories – the crazies stand out even more than in the city!
Such a cute bowtie pattern. It would make a wonderful baby quilt.
Okay, now I am jealous of Carrie, too! A trip to Espana.. or Italia.. would be lovely!!!! Ha! So would winning!!! 🙂 Thanks!
Oh my! That is such a funny story! As I tell my kids “Can’t we all just get along!” I am still chuckling! Thanks for brightening up my morning!
Loved the story about your Dad
